Sigh... I really root for this guy, but he seems to do everything he can to screw himself up. Do you think he's going to lose popularity or will it make him that much more lovable to the masses?

The guy's now 40. He is probably at the point people will stop feeling sorry for him and mention that he needs to get help. It sounds like he needs to get some serious counselling. Unfortunately, I don't know if he will. I see a guy whose personal problems may have cost him a chance for (at worst) the World Golf Hall of Fame. He has squandered his talent with all his problems.
This guy seems to revel in his own self-destruction! Watching just a bit of his tv show where he is smoking and drinking while his kids are right there and generally showing them his worst side completely turned me off.
I understand that he has addiction problems but it seems that everyone around him just continues to enable his bad behavior, including the tour, because he makes them money. Syncophants???
Sorry to say I no longer admire or root for him. It's time for him to step up and take responsibility for his life.
well on his show these days i dont see him drinking as much beer as diet coke, but the smoking has to go IMO. I hate to see such a big idol perform such a bad habit.

I completely agree with you. John Daly is so ghetto. I don't see why the golf channel has his show on prime time. Obviously, it is getting good rating but I don't see what the attraction is.
Daly's problems have gotten old, unless your into redneck , white trash stuff. The guy is a walking heart attack about to happen. His show of TGC is more gross then anything. Cig smoking , beer gulping or Coke , foul language and all of this around his soon to be a creep young son. Also, that washed up porn star looking wife of his is taking him to the cleaners ... again.
Now that many guys can fly Daly's best drive and his game continues to diminish ... it's just a matter of time before Big John is long gone. I ,for one dont really care
It's hard to feel sorry for him, but if he has to be addicted to something, boozing and smoking cigarettes is a **** of a lot cheaper than gambling. He does seem to find a way to reinvent himself, and no matter how we feel about him we keep on talking about him.

I agree 100%, Donnakay. John Daly is disgusting and, worse than that, he is bad for the PGA TOUR. I wish he'd disappear.
That GOLF Magazine stuff...or was it Golf Digest?...pushing for him to be selected for the Ryder Cup...is making a whole lot more sense now. And that is also disgusting.
Well, I don't smoke but I've been known to have a few beers myself. What, we all don't have bad habits? Get on your high horse and point fingers if you want, but JD makes a good living and can spend his money any way he wishes. Yes, he certainly has an addictive personality, but at least he does some charity work as well. I want to know how many of you have donated as much as JD. Disgusting? Whatever. Haters.
I've always liked him, still do. He has a addictive personality disorder, he needs help. Gimme a **** break with the smoking comments. It's not illegal, it's not immoral, no it's not healthy either, but neither is the fertilizer on the golf course, the air in Califoria, the freeway in any major city, the ocean, the polluted lakes and rivers...

I guess it's a good thing JD, the guy who took care of the family hit by lightning when he was broke and won the PGA, wasn't a female living in Salem Ma. in the 1690s. He'd be toast.
I find him genuine, generous, and open about who he is. Bad for the PGA Tour? If there is one Pro I'd feel comfortable playing 18 holes with, it'd be none other.
Never have understood the fancination with JD. Like everyone who has ever lived, I have my vices, but for the most part try to keep them private, not airing them out for everyone to see. Everytime you turn around, it seems like you hear of another vice JD is trying to overcome.
I wish him good luck and all, but he's the one who's dug the holes he's had in life and at some point I wish people like that would just shut up, quietly get their act together and let their actions speak louder than words.
That might sound harsh, but there's a lot to be said of a someone who has a quiet, yet confident, dignity about them. I know JD has done many good things to help people, but he needs to help himself first. Just do it quickly and without airing it all out in public.
That amount seems exaggerated given he has earned less than $9 million, I doubt his endorsements would cover the other $50 million. Probably just a another way to sell his book.
