I was watching Wachovia coverage yesterday (Friday) on USA. They started the recap of the day and went from the top (Bo) and nicely skipped VJ and went on to Stuart Appleby. Does any one else find this racist?
I have seen this many many times. Somehow they make it a point to not cover VJ
I hardly think that them skipping VJ is racist. It's just the way the media is. VJ hasn't been playing his normal this year, and Stuart Appleby has been on fire.
It's not different than when Tiger finished third or something, and gets more media coverage than the winner of the tournament...is this also racist?
Racist? - are you kidding me. There are plenty of golfers who don't get good coverage and they're white. deronsizemore made excellent points. Also, perhaps yesterday they didn't cover much of Vijay but there are plenty of times when he gets lots of coverage. Accusations of racism are serious matters and it is somewhat irresponsible to toss them around like that.

Not allowing blacks to play on the PGA tour until the late 60's-early 70's was racist. Playing a tournament at a course that doesn't allow black members ( Shoal Creek) would be racist. Not showing a mediocre performance by Vijay Singh is not even close to racist, and as a black man, I resent that thought. We have to not throw out the race card every time we see something we don't like, because it negates anyone paying attention in the times that true racism is exhibited. As was mentioned before, every tournament Tiger is in, the focus is on him. Is that reverse racism? No, it's business. Tiger sells the tour. Vijay does as well, but more so when he's on top of his game, which he is not currently. Just because he may have had a decent day doesn't mean USA, ESPN or CBS is obligated to show more of his performance.
This is the thought process that scares me...

It's the same with Paddy Harrington. In New Orleans last week he made loads of birdies on the back 9 Sunday but they picked him up on #17. Remember the Accenture Matchplay? Harrington-v-Singh in the quarter finals and they only picked it up on the 19th. In the quarter finals!
I didn't see the highlights, but VIjay's 5 out of the lead. Why should they show him? Not like he did anything great yesterday to sprint up the leaderboard. Just because your name is Vijay, doesn't mean you get special privilege and they need to show your every highlight.

but if your name is eldrick ( tiger ), does that mean they need to show your every highlight?
dont get me wrong i like watching tiger, but they dont need to show his every shot and what he does in between holes, this even happens when he's well off the lead.

Well, I guess that kinda throws out the racist issue b/c Tiger is not white and he hogs the television. IMO, Tiger gets the coverage he does because he's Tiger. There's no other way to put it. He's the Michael Jordan of golf. He has 10 majors and is one of the best athletes, if not the best athlete, in the world. And the #1 factor of them all, he draws ratings and interest. Vijay does not.
And speaking of Vijay, I hope the poster's not upset when they don't show him on TV today. He's stinking up the joint. 3-over par for his round thru 6 holes.

When Tiger Woods first took the tee as a pro in Milwaukee (I believe) in 1996, and Nike came up with the "Hello World" campaign, all the guys on tour rolled their eyes and said 'come on'. And well they should. Ten years later, do you think they are still rolling their eyes? The Tour has never been more sucessful or marketable to so many different people. Sponsors are jumping through hoops. TV revenue is ridiculous. This is the Tiger effect, and that's why he's on the tube every time they get a chance to show his face. He sells the tour and makes everyone associated with it more money.
Vijay CAN sell the tour when he's competing well. I like Vijay a good bit, but in terms of selling power, he's not in Tiger or Phil's world. That isn't racist, it's business, and to have suggested racism, as I mentioned before, is not only wrong, but irresponsible.
Non golf people know who Tiger Woods is. Even if they hate golf they are always curious to how he's playing, **** , even one of the car forums I frequent gave condolensces to him for his father. Do you think any of these people who know who Vijay is? Probably not, so why shuld they show him if he's not in conention. Granted Tiger gets too much attention imo, I remember him being out of contention in a Major a year or 3 ago and insted of showing hte leader making shots, they showed Tiger eating a banana or apple or somthing and drinking a bottle of water.
