I just happened to catch an interview yesterday they had with VJ on the practice range. He was asked about his swing problems. VJ knows he's to flat on the backswing and is trying to keep the club more in front of him and more upright on the takeaway.
My question is, how in the world can a pro who hits mega balls get into a swing change such as that? It has really affected his play.
Interesting, since there's a thread referring to if you change your swing here on GR. It appears that , yes, you can have a change and not really know it.
I love VJ's game. He has one of the smoothest motions through the swing along with Freddie Couples, Camillo, and Jay Haas. But as of recent, I think he is starting to think too much about his swing. It isn't as fluid as it once was, probably cuz he wanted to bomb it 350 yds as opposed to 330. I remember in 2004 he said that he was hitting his driver so straight that he used it on practically every hole, and it showed that year. He already hits it pretty far (remember he nearly drove the 361 yd 10th hole at Whistling Straits). IMO, he just needs to stop tinkering with his swing so much and just play. I wish I could help him with his putting though. That's one thing he stinks at and needs to work on.

I guess I pegged it; I noticed that very thing a while back:

I think some guys don't know when to leave good enough alone when it comes to their golf swing. Also a golf swing is like a habit. Once you start swinging a club a certain way it's difficult to make changes that is both good or bad depending on what's going on with your swing.

I think sometimes it's easy for pros to get lazy or lose their focus and revert to old bad habits. I have suspected that Vijay might've gone through some kind of burn-out period...I mean the guy just plays almost every week.
But Vijay must also be aware that his window is beginning to close on him. He is now 43 years old and it can not be realistic to think that Vijay can remain a dominant, top-three-in-the world player through his mid-40's and into his late 40's. I think he is gunning for one last great run and David Feherty seems to think he is on the brink of such another period.
Well, Vijay's already out of the top-3 in the world for the first time in 2 years, and he may be out of the top 4 or 5 by the end of the month. I think he'll win some more tourneys, possibly another major, but I think his days of being one of the top 2 or 3 golfers in the world are over.
His swing got flatter because VJ was trying out a 50" driver earlier in the year, and it flattened his swing so he could hit the ball. The 'wart' between his eyes is a symbol saying that he is married

Why would VJ be trying out a non-conforming driver? Maximum allowable club length is 48", as stated in Appendix II, 1c of the Rules of Golf.
And I don't believe that growth just to the right of his left eyebrow is a marriage symbol. It looks like a mole, or some other growth, not the type of mark used in Hindu cultures to signify a status (those are usually centered between the brows, and above them). Of course, if you have a reference to something attributing the growth to his marital status, I'd really like to see it!

Too bad about the “Wart”… I was hoping he was available. Anyway, I prefer the “No Wart” look.
