The Regional qualifying is not a weak field by any mean. 2005 US Open Champion Michael Campbell barely made it by making a long birdie putt the on the 18th hole in the second round. I think this is more difficult than making the cut in a PGA tournament because you have to be in the top 10% to make it through instead of the 50% in a PGA tournament.
She chose one of the two tougher fields for her sectional qualifier. Generally speaking, the Columbus, OH sectional is the toughest because anyone playing at the Memorial that needs to still qualify will be there. They use two courses and generally take approx. 36 players from a field of approximately 150.
Annually, the second toughest place is that which is closest to the next PGA Tour event which is in New York so New Jersey will have a decent field strength.
I would have thought she would have stayed in Hawaii, since it would be a less difficult field, granted a top 5 finish would probably be required, and there wouldn't be as much press coverage.

The reason she didn't stay in Hawaii, is because she won't be in Hawaii.
She has the lpga championship on the east coast starting 8th June, Thurdsay.
The Sectional will be on 5th and 6th June.
So playing the sectional in Hawaii and then getting all the way to the east coast for the lpga championship wouldn't do her lpga major chances any good.
Otherwise, she would have played Hawaii, I'd say.
Your post just struck me as spin control just in case she fared well yesterday (less than stellar field....) or through the sectionals (anyone can have a career day at anytime). Your post is below. It's like you're covering all of the bases. I would paraphrase it this way: Wie can be successful but it's either because the competition is weak or because she finds lightning in a bottle with the help of the golf gods.
It's not really...it was just what I thought at the time. She's done very well so far and I hope she makes it through the sectional qualifying. As rodney_c corrected me, she'll need to play some good golf over two rounds to make it. Certainly she has it in her and it'd be great to see her at Winged Foot.
As for your shots at me...I'm not sure quite where you're going with it, but I have no intention of bickering with you over the subject. I was skeptical before but the girl is proving that she's got the game to be as successful as she wants to be on the LPGA and maybe someday make an impact on the PGA Tour as well.
I'm sorry, folks, but I must admit to being a tad naive regarding these sectionals. Does anyone know how the courses are set up and presented? Do they attempt to simulate U.S. Open conditions by narrowing the fairways and growing the rough?

New Jersey makes sense then.
Actually though, it isn't a two day qualifier, it is one day 36 holes. In the case of New Jersey, and Ohio qualifiers, which have very large fields, it's 18 on each of two tracks. If you have ever had to do that, it *****.

Reason: language
If she does, then it’s off to Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, N.J., where she will compete in the 36-hole sectional qualifier on June 6. She will be one of 200 or so players battling for 30something spots into the U.S. Open at Winged Foot.
There are already pros in town getting some rounds in at Canoe Brook. Michelle is making an appearance very soon, the word around town is. My cousin is a member at Baltustrol and fills me in. Don't know how reliable it is, but that is the gossip in the Summit, NJ area.

If it is 1 day, then why do they have it announced as being on June 5th and 6th?
Also, I quoted earlier that 30 golfers would get out of that sectional. That was stated in a golf channel article. However if you check out 2005 results:
Golf Central Daily said that Michelle's sectional would have 140 players, and about 20-25 would get through.
But about 50 of the field would be pga players.
