Michelle Wie - local US Open qualifying

Will she qualify, will she be first, will she be last?

I just want to note in advance that whether she finish first, last or anywhere in between, it is the fact that Michelle Wie is willing to give it a go, in things like US Open qualification, that is a big part in me being a fan of hers.

How many women have the bottle to enter such an event?

Personally I think if she plays well, she will secure 1 of the 3 available places and make it on to sectional. If that happens, I give her a very very outside chance of making it out of sectional to the US Open itself.

I give her a 50/50 shot of making it to sectionals...from what I've read, the field at her qualifying site isn't that stellar. The chances of her making it to the US Open are pretty slim, but I wouldn't put anything past anyone...golf is a fickle game and anyone can have career day at any time.

I guess her chances are as good as anyones. She hits the ball as far as most men do and if she's playing well, I see no reason why she couldn't. That being said, I also think she should stick to the ladies tour and try and win some tournaments there. As I recall, the ladies have a US Open of their own.

Yes, she is playing the ladies US Open.
Funnily enough your timing of mentioning that. She has just been given an exemption. She had entered qualifying for that tournament, but has been given a full exemption, due to her play and money earned so far this year.

If your referring to me, I think she has a good chance of making it out of Local, and virtually none of making it out of Sectional.

WIE NEWS

Michelle will play Sept. 7-10 in the Omega European Masters in Switzerland, her first time competing on the European tour.
That will be her 4th major mens tour.

There is a 13 year old boy playing in a qualifying here in the Albany, NY region. Guess his parents must also be off and possibly the only one to think that he might play at Winged Foot. You might remember that there was a 15 year old that qualified for the open several years ago. Maybe his parents were the only ones that thought he could get there and were please to find out they were right.

To make it out of sectional, she needs to finish in the top couple of places. That is against many seasoned pga pros. That would require everything to go just right for her. Also, many in the field may not be top pga pros but they are still seasoned players, and are well capable of having a great day.
At least a few people are bound to have great rounds.

To make a pga cut, all she needs to do is be in the top 70 after 2 rounds. That's do exactly what she did at the John Deere last time, but not make double bogie, bogie, with 4 holes to go.

I'd remove the "virtually" and agree with you wholeheartedly. I think it's absolutely impossible, but that's just my opinion.

Aren't "virtually none" and impossible the same thing? Of course, there is no such thing as foretelling the future so I would think that both of you can be proved incorrect in your assumptions.

I think most people give her a fairly decent chance of getting out of local qualifying. That's 3 from 41 spots.
However, even if half of them don't know the difference between a 9 iron and a putter, this is still just one round of golf, so anything can happen.

I want to revise my earlier statement where I said:

Quote:
I think she has a good chance of making it out of Local, and virtually none of making it out of Sectional.
I since found out, there is 30 who qualify from a field of 200 in the sectional tournament.
So I want to change my prediciton to an outside chance.

If she does, then it’s off to Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, N.J., where she will compete in the 36-hole sectional qualifier on June 6. She will be one of 200 or so players battling for 30something spots into the U.S. Open at Winged Foot.

Hopefully she'll make it through the Local Qualifier and give herself a shot in New Jersey.
I wonder if that guys knows anything about golf at all, and just how difficult a task it is.
My hope was that she could get through local qualifying so that she would experience sectional, and then hoping that experience would help her down the line.

I don't know if anyone cares, but here is Wie's first holes:
birdie, par, bogey, par, par, par.

So she is even par. The leader is at -3. No more information yet.

Oh yeah, it was a par 5 that she bogied. She birdied a par 4.

EDIT:
On 7 she birdied the par 4.
On 8 she bogied the par 3.

So still even par. Par is 72.
The top 3 scores posted are 66, 67 and 69.
She needs birdies galore.

My information is reliant on heresay, so there could be mistakes there.

The info in my previous post as regards leading scores wer incorrect.
They were from a different qualifier in Hawaii.

Michelle is still at level par after 10 holes.
Conditions are supposed to be very windy, so level par is expected to be close to the lead, if not in the lead.
