And when it was all said and done, the difference from last years Memorial to this years in relation to sand saves was 6 inches. They did not turn out to be the big deal everyone thought it would be. Those that complained were probably those who are terrible bunker players. In my opinion, it is supposed to be a difficult shot - it is a bunker. Those pros that complained should just keep quiet - after all, they get to play golf for a living. When was the last time they whined about the bunkers at The Old Course?
I'm suprised that more designers ahve not used pot bunkers as a penal hazard. On a links course, small pot bunkers are an effective hazard, because you can not consider playing to the green. Modern courses go far large bunkers with no lips to accommodate the corporate player rather than penalise the pro. If you saw 200 pot bunkers scattered at 300 yards on a course you would see the pros more nervous.
I agree with all of you. The pros have gotten lazy. They want a perfect lie even when they miss the green. If you're in a hazard, you SHOULD dread it. The bunkers are not supposed to be easy. I, too, hope they start using this method for all the tournament bunkers. Maybe they can trim the rough in majors just a little bit shorter and make the bunkers more difficult. Make the players go back to learning how to hit accurate shots, not just long ones.
That being said...those rakes should ONLY be used for PGA events. The USGA better not make that the official golf rake because I have a hard enough time playing out of GOOD bunkers!
I hope the PGA goes with the new rake.....If so now the whining will be was the bunker raked perpendicular or parallel to the flag. Perpendicular makes it harder.
I love the new bunkers, to me it helps put the short hitters back in to contention and makes the grip it and rip it crowd think twice about trying to drive the green on short holes (Bubba did it but he admittedly had nothing to lose at that point).

Texas Wedge
Actually, I don't think it will hurt the average joe as much as it did the pros. The average joe doesn't put alot of spin on the ball, and it doesn't make it any tougher to get the ball out for the 25 hdcp player. The better players who can spin the ball and stop it on a dime, will have to play the ball differently.
I think it is great. I have played a course where they had old school rakes that left furrows(about 26 years ago). You begin to rethink approach shots, and going for a par5 in two. You start thinking a hundred yard sw will get closer than a greenside bunker shot.

Wouldn't ANY direction, for all intents and purposes, be perpindicular to the flag? I mean, if they were parallel, it would have to be a wall of sand with grooves going vertically.
Do you mean parallel or perpindicular to the direction of play? Or with the lines always from the side closest to the hole towards the opposite side?
Good Lord, the more I try to explain, the worse I think I'm making it!

Has to be to the direction of play...
As for the issue at hand, consider me in agreement with all of the above sentiments. They're hazards for a reason...it bothers me hearing guys yell "get in the bunker" when they hit an offline shot.
