3 Wood, 3 Metals

Why must some TV announcers call a 3 wood a 3 metal??? (Lanny and Johnny M.)

3 wood is a generic term for a non iron. We know they are not made of wood anymore.

It's a 3 wood or 5 wood etc!!!!!

Well, irons are not made of iron. They are made of steel. Maybe we should say "Yeah, Johnny, I faded that 5 carbon steel (or stainless steel) right around the tree, landed it below the hole and then it ran up to 6 feet. I knew my game was on then. These are some nice steels (etc.) Titleist, Callaway, TM, Nike etc. has outfitted me with."

I don't have a problem calling them woods or metals. Everyone knows what is being talked about.

I think its silly when announcers refer to woods as "metals." It sometimes comes off as sounding snobbish or elitist. Irons are not made of iron, and woods aren't usually made of wood, but these are terms all golfers understand.

A few years from now when everyone is using some kind of carbon composite headed clubs that's harder and lighter than titanium, will they start saying "he's pulled out his 3 composite and is going to lay up".

"Wood", "Iron", "Hybrid", "Wedge", "Putter", "Mashy Niblick", whatever - they are all just names for clubs. Names are applied and stick to things, even though the meaning may change. There are a lot of folks named "Smith" who've never swung a hammer or made a horseshoe, and plenty of "Coopers" who've never made a barrel!
