Exclamation Observation: US Open Exemptions

Greetings ...

On the strength of his win today at the Memorial, coupled with his earlier win at the 2005 Chrysler-Tampa Bay Classic, Carl Pettersson gets a full exemption into the US Open. He had been scheduled to play a 36-hole sectional qualifier on Monday.

In looking over the exemptions from both qualifying stages, note that exemptions S-11 (Top 10 2006 PGA Tour Money Leaders), S-13 (Top 2 2006 Euro PGA Tour Money Leaders) and S-16 (Top 50 World Rankings) are all thru May 28th 2006. Exemption S-12 (Two wins in official PGA Tour Events) runs from April 27th 2005 thru June 4th 2006.

Hmmm.

You may be aware that two of the three official money World Golf Championships (Bridgestone Invitaional and American Express Championships) have dual cut-off dates of two weeks prior -AND- one week prior to the particular event for categories such as PGA Tour Money List, Euro PGA Tour Money List and World Rankings.

So, why not dual cut-off dates of May 28th -AND- June 4th for US Open full exemption categories S-11, S-13 and S-16 ??

Anyway, Congrats Carl

Because in Carl's case, you had somebady scheduled to do something they no linger need to do. The rankings can change week to week, so if you fell out of the top 50 world ranking suddenly you would need to play a qualifier. So you would be adding a player to a qualifier somewhere, when tee times have already been given out.
