Interesting mini-interview of Ernie in this month's GOLF magazine, in which Ernie says, among other things, "...but the quicker I can get to my goals, the quicker I can get out of here."
Ernie does not elaborate and the interviewer, a one Cameron Morfit, does not pursue. It would be interesting to hear if Ernie is sick and tired of playing so much in the United States, or if 15+ years of touring has just burned him out.
I know Ernie has been recovering from his surgery and perhaps his injury has had a greater impact on his game than most might have suspected, but Ernie has appeared (to me, at least) a tad disinterested lately. He seemed to have a greater fire back when he believed he could beat anybody. I think Tiger's earlier dominance and Ernie's many close calls may have sapped him of some intensity.
Ernie is still only 36 years old and, conceivably, could have yet another decade of prime golf in him. Is it difficult to believe that Ernie has one only one major championship over the last nine years? Who could've imagined that back in June of 1997?
It's been a rough year for Ernie. The injury happened almost a year ago, so he should be pretty recuperated by now. He's just in a slump right now. Things aren't going well for him, and he sounds like he's a tad frustrated. Hopefully he gets it together soon.
I think it is better to remember he has won 3 majors. 1994 and 1997 US Open Championship and the 2002 (British) Open Championship and 59 tournaments worldwide. But yeah, his game is not the same this year as in the past.
Yeah, I agree... He does seem really disinterested at times.
There's a point to where you take a step back and evaluate what's important in life. Maybe the time off with his family has made him realize a part of his life that he seldom gets to enjoy being on the road most of the time. Then again, maybe he's just a few good tournaments away from getting the spark he needs to get his old form back.
He's also had a bit of "off course" distraction that can't be helping his game - but it isn't good to see him getting a bit uptight. Maybe he's trying too hard?
Ernie was never a golf is everything sort of guy. He once flew the green at the Open when his brother gave him the yardage from the wrong hole. He collapsed in laughter.Although he tries his hardest on the course, he does think his life will be measured by Major wins.
funny thing about golf and sports in general, you just never know when the switch turns on and you get hot (i.e. vj and phil). should he get a couple of wins in a short time, who knows? he's got the game.
Sure does. And this line is revealing: "As I said at the start of this article, it’s the first time I can ever remember losing the plot in a competitive round of golf. On those final three or four holes, my head just wasn’t there. Hopefully it will be the last time that happens."

2004 took alot out of Ernie ... he had a chance to win all 4 majors
Masters - Phil beats him on that putt. Ernie , like Greg Norman deserves to win one Masters. I still think it will happen soon.
US Open - final pairing with Goosen. Shoots 80 after getting ticked at the course
British - this one hurt. Loses to a Todd Hamilton. Something wasnt right about that one
PGA - one shot from a playoff
2004 could have been easily been a 2 major season for Ernie , with some luck 3 , with some real good luck all 4.
He has another major in him or two. Probably next year though

That may all be true and I also think Els will bounce back, but there was no smoke & mirrors involved in the 2004 majors. This wasn't Norman having guys knocking them in from the fairways or bunkers to lose, Ernie just got beat.
