Very nice victory for Vijay, breaking a very frustrating 10-month winless skein. The putts finally fell and he struck some quality shots coming in.
Of note, this victory is Vijay's 29th career PGA TOUR win. He joins Phil on that number. It is also the great Fijian's 17th TOUR victory since turning 40 years old. That ties the legendary Sam Snead for the all-time TOUR record.
Great win for VJ, although I still don't like his chances next week. I don't think Winged Foot is a good course for him. But you never know....he might surprise me.
Tremendous win for Vijay. !!!! I root for him a lot because he has a legendary work ethic and I like to see hard work rewarded with wins. I picked him to win the Masters and, of course, was disappointed but maybe...if his putting comes together he has a chance at Wingfoot. Here's hoping anyway...Go Vijay.
Vijay definitely needed this one for some confidence heading to Winged Foot. You can usually expect him to contend in any major, although winning at a place like Westchester means his ballstriking must be pretty solid heading into next week.
I feel like Johnny come lately to this post. Vijay is the man! That course seemed pretty tough and he was able to go unbogied throughout the last round. That was major like. He had a decently strong field this week and came out on top. I root for him because he doesn't have a swing coach yet has the beautiful silky smooth swing.
I didn't see the telecast but it kinda sounded like everyone else in the field fell apart and he was the last man standing.
Yep, that's pretty much the way it went.
I watch every single PGA TOUR event and the one thing that always strikes me is how extremely difficult it is to win. Each week boils down to anywhere between three or four and nine or ten guys with a legitimate shot at winning the tournament. And you have to think that nearly everyone who finds himself in the hunt, come Sunday, has to be playing some pretty solid golf and is running on a decent amount of confidence.
But it seems that, on those Sunday back nines, the pressure just becomes too much for nearly everyone. You almost always see a couple, or a few implosions. Adam Scott was an excellent example this past week. Adam has now finished 3rd-3rd-4th and 2nd in his last four TOUR starts and, in each and every one of those, Adam has come loose at the most critical of junctures.
I suppose this just makes the victories that much sweeter for the guys who do, in fact, prevail. And Vijay was the guy this past week.
Vijay's ball-striking and driving accuracy haven't been very good at all this year, and his putter has actually helped him out a bit it seems. He looked more like his old self this past week though with good ball-striking and solid but not great putting.
