Wing Foot will be 7,264 yards, par 70 courses. 7,264 is a long course by any stretch and to make it a par 70?
The fairways--average width of 26 to 28 yards--will be surrounded not just by the usual two-yard-wide band of "interim" rough an inch and a quarter deep, but also by a second band of rough. That band will be six yards wide or so, and its depth will be a game-time decision. There is going to be a 540 yard par 4.
Based on that If Tiger hit the ball straight he wins. For Phil it will be about putting. But I would not be surprised if a short hitter like Furyk wins because the course is set up to penalize distance. Sergio has a great chance becuse he hits the ball so straight and his irons are the best in the game.....yet he needs to learn how to putt.
tigers driving average is only two yards longer than phils and their driving percentage both arond 60%. i would give phil the edge just for the fact that he's been playing and tiger hasn't.
Writing off Tiger just b/c he hasnt been playing officialy is some what ignorant dont ya think ? He's been practicing everyday & all this hoopla about him/his dad/ect is only gonna enforce just how good he is mentaly.

Woods to win by atleast 3-5 strokes
Exactly right. He's not been sitting in his new house in Jupiter or out on his yacht pining away for his dad. And one thing above all else Tiger's dad did was instill a mental toughness into his son. Tiger will be all business, and his business is winning majors. Now, that doesn't mean someone else can't have a great week and win it, but they will have to beat Tiger to do it.
The sight of Tiger having to help Phil into his second Green Jacket this past April makes any jab easily deflected.
Phil had to do the same thing for Tiger last year, or did you already forget that little fact?
As for this nonsense about Tiger being afraid of Phil on the golf course, has anyone watched Phil in his last two tourneys? He's been hitting it all over the lot, making miracle shots just to barely manage a good finish, which is similar to how Tiger has been playing for YEARS now. The most important thing for Phil is hitting fairways. When he hits them, he is very tough to beat especially at the majors. Tiger is the same way (in fact, if Tiger hits a lot of fairways this week, I'd be almost 90% certain that he'd win the tournament), but I think we can pretty much expect him to not hit very many. The Associated Press has an article out right now that says Tiger's game was sharp for his 9 holes of practice earlier today at Winged Foot. Then again, they said he was really sharp headed into the 2004 U.S. Open and look how that turned out for him.

Writing off Tiger because he hasn't played competitive golf in 2 months is a lot less ignorant than presuming that his dad's death is going to magically inspire him to new heights. j1mo
The course is set up to penalize inaccuracy, not distance.
That is the same thing.......the most accurate golfers in the world avg a 5% miss off line....most Pro's avg 7%. So the longer you hit the ball with the same precentage of miss the larger the miss will be.
But he hasn't been able to close the deal on Sunday afternoon. More than any other major the U.S. Open is about mental toughness. I don't think he's there mentally to close the deal on Sunday afternoon.

Sunday afternoon on the back nine of a U.S. Open IS ALL ABOUT MENTAL TOUGHNESS. If Tiger is at or near the lead on Sunday afternoon my money is on him closing the deal.
