You can see he doesnt have his edge as most of his shots are just off. Just too short, just too long, just a bit left etc etc
I'm shocked anyone could think he any real chance to win this, i knew he was going to come out rusty. I doubt if his mental game is there atm aswell and he must be under alot of pressure and expectations.
I reckon we will see an improvement day by day, i like to see him get a top 15 finish!
We all know that some days we play better than we score, all errors are punished all bounces are not what we want. Other days we score better than we play, balls bounce kindly, putts go in when we recover well.
Tiger had a sod's law day ,maybe he wil paly worse and score better tomorrow. If you give all the players better than +5 a 76 and all players between +5 and +8 a 69, it is easy to believe that at the start of the weekend a lot of players will have a chance.
P.S. Sod's law is an English phrase to describe the way life works against you, e.g. when you drop a piece of toast it always lands butter side down if you have a brand new carpet.

IMO, it looked like he started getting his act together over the last 4-5 holes. Hit a few fairways (all be it, not many), his some quality iron shots to pin-high, and looked as though he had the speed of the greens figured out.
If he went out and shot -2 today he would be right back in it.
As much as I hate to say it......I think you can put a fork in Tiger. Hopefully he can hang on and at least make the cut. +10 or +11 should be the cut number if he can just par out.

Tiger is toast. I think that is the first time I have ever said that because I am a Tiger super fan......Yet he is doing very badly. So it is now time for plan B........
Yep, and Stricker's playing great right now, so 10 shots could very well be +8. I still can't figure out why Tiger keeps hitting driver. He used to be a master course strategist, but lately he just insists on hitting driver when he should be hitting an iron or fairway wood off the tee. I'm certain he's better off with a 5 iron in the fairway than 8 iron from the primary rough.

I agree. Whatever happened to his "stinger" 2-iron? That was his "go to" shot whenever he absolutely had to get it in the fairway.

Likewise, remember the hook 3-wood? He used to have a Titleist 3-wood that he got into the fairway what seemed like 90% of the time with a nice draw. Then, a couple years ago he switched to a Nike 3-wood to please the folks at Nike, and now it seems like he never uses it off the tee and when he does, he misses the fairway quite a bit with it. If I were him, I'd ask Nike to give me a 3-wood and driver with shafts that are 5 inches shorter than they currently are. Maybe that'll help straighten him out some. Of course he's too stubborn to do something like that, but if he does miss the cut, it will force him to re-evaluate himself and hopefully then he'll realize that he used to be a much smarter strategist around the golf course (then maybe he'll change things up).
Well it looks as if he's going to have to pick up a stroke or 2 to stick around this weekend. He's not toast yet, but he's getting warmer. I'm not going to pretend that I hate to say I told you so but

I did. The notion that anyone, even Tiger, could take a 9 week layoff from competitive golf then come back and be sharp on a US Open layout was wishful thinking at best. If he can stick around he could still move up the board some with a couple of rounds under his belt, but I don't see another major for him this weekend.

He does have 3 potential birdie holes coming up at 5, 6, and 7. However, he just hit an awful putt at the 4th hole so it looks like a nice 3-jack for bogey. The key is he needs to hit the fairways at 5 and 6 (especially 6). Other than that, he's just gotta make pars the rest of the way (even though he's about to make bogey lol). I think he's definitely toast for WINNING, but he still has a decent/good chance at making the cut.
And you were right Wazman, although I would say he'd play like this REGARDLESS of time off. It sounds like he's got a case of Ranger Rick going on, just like in 2004 and some of 2005. Hank Haney said he's been hitting it great in practice rounds, so it sounds like he's just not taking it to the course, which has been a problem for him all year with the driver.
