Scoring Average...

Well, the first round is now finished and the scoring average officially was 75.984.

So, +6 was par for the course and it was the softest conditions they'll see all week!

Tiger was only .16 of a shot from being average. Not often that you see tiger below average

Very true, although I have a feeling tomorrow he'll be about 6 shots better than average with a 69 or 70.

Now all Tiger has to do is shoot even par the last 3 days, and he may be the champion!

I hope he is, he might want to do a little better just to be sure he won't miss the cut.

Ummm...the rule is 10 shots. Tiger is already within 7 of the lead even after today's miserable round. If he shoots -1 or Even tomorrow, I think he'll be within 5 shots of the lead (maybe even better). On the Golf Channel's post-game show right now, the wind is blowing quite a bit, which means the course could be dried out more tomorrow (which means guys like Furyk and Mickelson will have to deal with tough afternoon conditions so they won't be running and hiding from the field). I'll be surprised if the lead is in red numbers tomorrow night. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it's +1 or +2.

Oh, I wasn't aware that it was 10 shots for the cut, I guess I just assumed that like half of the field made it. What would happen if there are only a couple of guys within 10 shots of the lead? Very unlikely, I know, but would there only be that many playing past Friday?

Oh, sorry. I should have mentioned that it's anyone within 10 shots OR in the top 60 (maybe 70?). Tiger is currently in 68th, but I think if he stays at +6 through tomorrow, he'll be in 30th place or so (perhaps even better). There's a 15-20 mph wind blowing at Winged Foot right now (remember the overnight wind at Shinnecock 2 years ago?) and I think the greens will be even tougher tomorrow, especially with it getting up to around 85 degrees tomorrow.

Even if Tiger does shoot 70 tomorrow, odds are he's going to be in the top 30 or 40....I'm thinking the cut's going to be around +10. This course isn't going to get any easier looking at the weather forecast. It's downright scary. Fast greens and breezy conditions= Survival.

So you think the lead will be Even par? I think it could be more like +1 or +2, which would push the cut to +11 or +12, and maybe higher if there are people with higher scores than that in the top 60 or whatever it is that is required to make the cut.

I think it will be. I think either Phil or Furyk will hold ground. I would say one guy at E, maybe 2 or 3 at +1, a few more at +2 and then stacking up from there. I still think if Tiger shoots even par the next 2 days, going into round 4 he's going to have a shot to win this thing. 6 or 7-over may look bad now, but if you can right the ship and just try and hang in there with the wind that's projected saturday, you might have a shot sunday.

There's actually a pretty good wind blowing at Winged Foot as we speak. Remember Shinnecock 2 years ago with the overnight wind? If they don't water the greens like crazy over night, I think tomorrow could be tougher than today was, and with Phil and Furyk playing late in the day, I think the bumpy poa-anna will gobble them up like it did Tiger and others (not to mention the greens being harder b/c of the drying out from this overnight wind and the 85 degree temperatures tomorrow). I think it will be really good if Phil or Furyk manage to shoot even +1 or +2 tomorrow to be honest. Poa-anna greens can be really tough in the afternoon, and all of a sudden those 5 footers for par don't drop b/c of footprints, etc. (see Tiger's first putt of the day with the big hop it took for a perfect example).

I tend to think someone will be at even tomorrow for the lead...whether that be Furyk or Mickelson or Monty holding on, or someone a few over shooting a great round, I think it'll happen. Tiger just putted atrociously today...if he gets the putter straightened out he'll be fine, despite the bad start. It's not inconceivable that +6 could win the event if the weather turns nasty on the weekend.

Saturday and Sunday, it could be brutal. Winds are supposed to blow b/w 10-15mph, just enough to make a difference, and heat is going to be a factor. Temps in the low 90s with nothing but sunshine. These greens will dry up in a heartbeat.
