Plus bad back, bad knees, and who knows what else.

Like him or hate him, Johnny Miller is undoubtedly the most golf-savy American announcer we have. Although I do grow tired of his eagerness to pet his own ego, if ANYONE has the credentials to say that a guy choked in a tournament, he does.

As far as his personality is concerned, he doesn't impress me. But he can set the stage and articulate exactly what a guy is going through better than anyone. If they were giving class on how to be a technically sound critic of tournament golf, he'd be the head instructor.

But I guess my point is, no one knows the exact conditions and what is going through the players' mind except for the player himself. The announcer (J. Miller) is sitting in a sterile booth, without the exact view, without the internal emotion, without the feeling of the crowd and the elements that in aggregate combine to help determine a golf shot. That's why, whether it's J. Miller or anyone else, I'm kind of prone to take exception to the blurted comments of 'that was a horrible choice of shot', whether intended or not. Perhaps if he said stuff like, "I don't think it came off like the player intended", I could more readily accept. But sitting in a booth is such a sterile environment, I'd even give more creedence to the anchormen in the field who can at least better appreciate the shot at hand.

Here's my take on it.... A lot of the guys in the booth are running their mouths waaaay too much, talking about trivial non-golf **** that doesn't have anything to do with the golf tournament they're covering. Mike Terrifico Terrico comes to mind, matter of fact.

Johnny Miller is a washed up has-been, no doubt about it. But he's definitely merited the "been there, done that" stereotype that affords him (imo) the privilege to be frank and honest with his assessments. If you prefer the jibber jabber of the likes of Lanny Wadkins or Mike Terrifico, you're probably not going to care for the matter-of-fact style of Johnny Miller. Personally, I can't stand the guy's ego, but he's "been there and done that" and I have no beef having a guy like that calling the shots like he sees them, as opposed to having to endure "Yes-Man" Mike Terrico's endless drival about Duffy Waldorf's wardrobe, Ian Poulter's flare, and everything else not related to golf.

It basically boils down to preference and personality.

I'll 2nd that - he also didn't hesitate to say that he'd lost his head in "that" bunker and seemed quite amused by the other announcer's reference to it. Mickleson was riding for a fall all day and Miller left one in no doubt that he disagreed with his choice of club on his 3 foot fairway wood from the rough - he was right, a par on the par 5 would have saved him a lot of grief at the end.
