Johnny Miller!

Did anyone else just hear his hilarious comment about Phil?

Dan Hicks was talking about Phil's preparation before this week, and Johnny chimes in:

"Well, it looks like Phil slept in the car last night and forgot to shave."

Honestly, that's gotta be one of the funniest comments I've heard on a golf telecast ever (and Johnny himself has made plenty of them, except usually they refer to bad golf shots LOL).

Well, if anyone heard Johnny Miller's interview a year ago about Phil on the Rome Show, we know he's not the biggest Phil fan. He'll take his jabs at Phil when he can. At least Phil has trimmed the hair a little bit, but it still could use a few more chops off in the back.

GF, it wasn't meant as a dig, just a joke and a good one at that. Phil knows he looks gooney with the long hair, but he insists his wife likes it so he's doing what's best for his own health if ya ask me.

Johnny actually at the beginning of the telecast today was saying that Phil is definitely the man to beat and that if Phil hits that nice little fade and keeps it in the fairway, he should win it this week. Johnny's a fair guy. He likes Tiger quite a bit, but that's probably because Tiger has proven him wrong so many times over the years (and he's accomplished a lot more than Johnny already in his career so I guess Johnny is a little bit hesitant to trash on him). Phil has done a lot in his career and actually has had a better career than Miller IMHO, but Johnny must not think so if he was trashing him in an interview. The other thing about Phil that probably bothers Johnny is the perceived lack of honesty from Phil. A lot of people, including the Touring pro's themselves, say that he's a different person behind the scenes. Johnny likes honest people since he is brutally honest himself. The sleeping in the car thing was just a nice joke though. I think even Phil would laugh at it if he heard it. I know I'd laugh at such a joke if it were directed at me. In fact, I haven't shaved in quite a while (a few weeks) and my hair is REALLY long right now. My parents have been joking with me about it for the last few weeks. LOL.

I've heard this said more than once. I've never heard it attributed to anyone, though. I like Phil. He's one of the most popular players on tour, for a very good reason... he treats the fans well. He also seems to be having a very good time out there. If he's been dishonest or we're going to allude that he's not honest, I think we owe it to him to cite at least ... oh ... maybe 1 example of this. If these unamed "Touring pros" who allegedly harbor these feelings about Phil don't have the to come out and say it, then they're not worthy of my ear or respect. j1mo.

lol. Can't believe his wife likes the hair. But if I were him and had a wife like her, I'd do whatever turns her on, too. He can almost pass for a character in "Grease" with the look.

From what I've heard, Tiger and other players think Phil is arrogant. Which, if you listen to his press conferences, he can be a rather wordy kind of guy (Mr. Know It All type). I definitely think there's more going on behind the scenes than he lets on while playing or in front of the media, but all in all I like Phil a lot. I can see how he might get on others' nerves (he seems like a really smart guy, but maybe he's too smart for some people's liking). Most of the pro's seem like nice guys, but I can see how Tiger or Phil would get on other players' nerves in the locker room.

Waz, Skip Bayless (a really bad journalist in my opinion and a jerk to boot) wrote a pretty scathing article about Tiger and Phil recently for ESPN.com's Page 2. In it, he says that Mark Lye has said that Phil could be intimidating in the locker room...and Bayless says a bunch of other not so flattering stuff about Tiger and Phil, much of which I bet is true. You might wanna check it out:

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2...bayless/060614

Also, GQ Magazine named him the 8th most hated athlete by his peers. Check out their article, in which they quote a Tour player (anonymously though):

Both those articles are quite lame and reaching. Typical media stuff. But Bayless' is exceptionally bad.

Phil Mickelson hasn't concocted any media persona at all. He is a genuinely nice guy who, by the way, is not disliked by everyone on TOUR. Ask Billy Mayfair, Gary McCord and Chris DiMarco, among many, what they think about Phil.

But Phil and Tiger are also smart enough to realize that they live and work in a fish bowl...surrounded, literally, by thousands of people who would just as soon use them, or take advantage of them to serve their own purposes.

I agree about Skip droogy. He's really good at dissing people. He dissed Tiger after the Masters and British Open last year, and I'm pretty sure he dissed Phil after the Masters this year too.

I'll ask Chris DiMarco and Gary McCord, but NOT Billy Mayfair. Was 3 feet from the guy for 5 minutes at a tournament and learned he may be the biggest ****** on Tour. I hate that guy.

I personally think Phil's a nice guy. I think there's some truth to the rumors that he does over-do it a bit in front of cameras, but overall I have a positive impression of the guy. I'm more of a Tiger fan, though, and I'll prolly root for guys like Padraig and Furyk this weekend over Phil.

I can't stand Bayless. Without a definitive example of Phil's alleged transgressions it's impossible for me to comment. Of course the guy may act differently towards the fans(customers) than he would towards his opponents. I wouldn't consider that 2-faced or dishonest, but again we have nothing tangible to go on... just anonymous overly general griping. Until something specific comes out, I'll go with his millions of fans over a few disgruntled (jealous ?) opponents.

Johnny Miller's know-it-all at'tude getting old.

I'm starting to get tired of Miller saying how awful everyone's shot was as if the mis-hits were the intended shots. I would love to hear Phil tell Johnny, "if you can do it better, why ain't you out here?" I hope Phil wins just to get Johnny's goat about his shot choices.

Actually, even at his age I wouldn't be surprised if Johnny Miller is just as good of a ball-striker, if not better than Phil. Johnny's problem is his putting and always has been. He would tear up the Champions Tour if he weren't Vijay times 100 in terms of great ballstriking + AWFUL putting.
