because they got a little bit ahead of themselves on the final hole.
Monty's "What kind of shot was that?" will live in infamy in his mind if he never subsequently wins. Doesn't have quite the same ring as "Be the right club today" ...
Phil did not have to hit driver on the 18th, also questionable decision on the second shot. He had made a lot of great recovery shots all day to make up for his inability to keep it in the fairway off the tee. But eventually it caught up with him.
Geoff Ogilvy obviously hadn't been preparing his winner's speech, he was probably on the range warming up for possible playoff and then was as surprised as anyone. Not bad for an impromptu speech by a first-time major but not very compelling either. Oh well ...
Montgomerie truly choked at #18 and, to tell the truth, it didn't surprise me at all. But Phil's decisions on #18 shocked me. Lately he has resisted the obvious urges he must have to do ridiculous things.
Monty's bad shot at 18 was too bad, but bad shots happen, even to these guys. Nobody makes a perfect shot all the time
Phil's decisions over the final three holes were entirely preventable. Those decisions make this one of the biggest US Open collapses. He had it in the bag.
I doubt it. I'll admit, I didn't want Phil to win this one...but I feel badly that he lost it in the way he did. Bones should have snapped Phil's driver in two on the 18th tee...he could have hit 3 iron or whatever his longest iron happened to be and been no more than 220 out in the fairway. Unfortunate that a poor decision cost him the US Open he wants so badly.
As soon as Monty changed clubs at the last second, I had the feeling disaster was coming. Im not a big fan of changing clubs at the last second like that, especially when you're sitting there for 10 minutes with the other club. Second guessing goes on in your head and bad things happen.
I was kind of hoping for Monty to win this one. Somebody I have not heard any comments on is Furyk. To miss that last short putt which would have put him in a Monday playoff with Ogilvie has got to be painful.
I didnt mind Geoff winning. This is his 2nd win I believe this year . I had a feeling at the beginning of the week an Aussie was going to win.
So far them Aussies are doing well on the tour this year Stuart,Aaron, and Rod to mention.
Fuyrk,Monty and Mickleson will all have nightmares about the 18th.
Mickleson took par out of play with his tee shot and then chased the win into a double bogey.
Furyk's putt and Monty's second shot will haunt them for a long time. At least Furyk has a Major title to console himself with.

In his post match interview he admited that it was the wrong club selection. He went with a 6I rather than a 7I but he also caught it a little heavy.
Too bad. I don't think he will get a better chance in winning a major.
Monty missed several greens on his right and found a way back, on 18, under pressure he 3 stabbed to miss a Monday Play-off.
Furyk just couldn't settle over his four footer and stabbed it ala Doug Sanders at St Andrews in 1970.
Phil trying to hit it too hard again was lucky not to hit it OOB.
But Ogilvy kept his nerve and made an Up & down and is now the 2006 US Open Champion.
Although I would have liked to see Monty win, I did enjoy watching a great finish.

Only finding the fairway with his Driver, 2 times, and scrambling all day, finally caught up to Phil,........ especially the 2 foot dub with the FW wood from the long grass.
Monty , Furyk and Ogilvy gave their all, but Winged Foot won.
I'm disappointed - disappointed IN Phil for utterly blowing himself away. All the way round he looked like a guy who knew what he had to do to close it out. To give all those shots back over the last 3 holes was not like the new Phil.
I'm disappointed for Monty - I expecting him to implode on Saturday, but he proved a lot of doubters wrong by hanging in there. I thought his tournament had gone when he hit that average bunker shot on 15, but then he drained that monster on 17 to be right in there. He would have been a deserving winner if he could have parred the last.
I'm also a bit disappointed for Ogilvy - surely victory is not quite as sweet when someone chucks it up like Phil did.
