How many of you would have pulled the driver after missing almost all of the fairways? When you have a bad day with the driver do you find other ways to attempt par?

Like I said in the previous post, I have more of a problem with the 2nd shot than the 1st. Phil took 4-wood and iron out on a couple holes and STILL couldn't hit the fairway. So even if he didn't hit the driver, he wasn't gauranteed an easy road for par or bogey.

He missed a couple of fairways with a 4 iron. A 4 wood was probably the play. A long iron, even if he'd hit the fairway would've left another long/mid iron where anything could've happened and we'd be talking about what a wuss he was for not playing to win. The 2nd shot selection was the real brain fart.

The 1st shot was dumb with driver....the 2nd was STUPID trying to go for it. He could have hit 8i-8i-8i and still had a par putt to win it!

If he goes 8 iron 8 iron 8iron and misses the putt because it is a longer one, goes into a playoff and does not win there. Everyone of you would be calling him stupid for not going for the long ball and the chance for bird. I think the only mistake he made was trying to make that second shot so he could make birdie instead of going for the sure thing par or at worse the bogey.

No they would not....everybody saw at that point he hit only 2 fairways with his driver.

what did he hit like 2 fairways ? I didn't see him tee off with an iron but they said he missed a few fairways with irons as well. So he could of pulled that 8 iron to the left and then been 300 yards from the hole. You just never know, he was lucky to be where he was anyhow. He missed the fairways so bad everytime that he ended up in the trampled grass instead of the 6 inches of grass. If there was no trampled grass and no tent's to bounce off of , phil would of shot a 95-100 yesterday.

He did use an iron off of #11 and #15 and it rolled thru the fairway into the first cut......which is way easier to hit from then inside the trash can he landed in with his driver.

Seriously, though...

How do you do that? How can you come to 18 knowing you have a one shot lead, knowing you've only hit two fairways and still hit the driver? I don't care what anyone says about missing with an iron or 4 wood - phooey on that! You still take a more conservative approach. Maybe he would have missed the fairway with that too. So what? At least he'd have given himself a more realistic opportunity. I also agree on the second shot being stupid. Did you watch it? Phil stood in the fairway and actually saw Ogilvy make his up and down for par. He knew EXACTLY where he stood and what it would take. There is NO REASON to try to get on the green in two at that point. Play the safe shot and take your medicine. You messed up by hitting the driver into the junk - OK. Ogilvy's in with par, one behind. If I hit this tree 20 yards in front of me, bogey isn't a given, so punch into the fairway, hit a 175 shot to the green and make sure I 2 putt for bogey. Play on Monday. This wasn't even vintage Phil, swashbuckling and losing. This was Van de Velde, minus the playoff...
