Heard one of the commentators at the tournament this weekend say that Michelle intends to apply for early admission to Stanford next year. Since word is that she is an A student with mostly honors courses, she'll probably be accepted although she obviously will not be on the golf team.
However, with the rigorous standards at that university, I do wonder how it will affect her playing schedule! I am pleased to hear that unlike the other young women on tour (Morgan, Natalie, Paula, etc.), she intends to continue her education.
My Dear Donnakay... I can see where you were going with this, somewhat... but Morgan graduated with honors, and spent more time studying this spring then golfing (and it showed). The St. Andrews Academy is as tough as many major colleges as far as studies go, and her 790 on the math portion of the SAT should serve as a sign that she has worked her butt off.
As for Paula, she went to a school for athletes with Sharipova, so I will not defend her.
Natalie graduated high school at 16, and even though she had qualified for an LPGA event at age 14, she went to school at Arizona. Only after having an incredible year at college, and internationally, did she decide to turn pro and go through Q-school.
As for Ms. Wie's schooling... I learned long ago that not all schools are the same. Making the honor roll in Hawaii may or may not be as tough as other schools.

I don't understand why you spend your day critisizing Wie. You don't like her putter, you don't like what she says, you don't like what she wears, you don't think she's all that great even though she's in the top 5 in practically every LPGA major and now you don't think that she's very smart (based on your assessment of schools in Hawaii).
Can you explain to me why you feel you must be so hard on a 16 year old golfer?
Yes, he is about the only one to complain on that issue. As leaguegolf said, there are plenty of men who have complained about her getting sponsors exemptions, due to taking them away from a struggling pro (which is nonsense anyway, sponsors exemptions never go to struggling pros), but Van de Velde is about the only player against the principle of women and men playing golf together.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just because he's the only one that spoke out against it, doesn't mean he's the only one.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you apply the same criteria to young boys. They try to qualify for majors too. A 15 year old boy actually qualified for the US Open. He didn't have any chance of winning either, but I think he would have gained good experience.
I also think the experience from Sectional would have helped Michelle alot.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
i did say i don't fault any of em for trying, but with all the attention Wie get's, i think she should try to improve first, with atleast an LPGA win.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
There were 8,500 entrants for the US Open. How many of them were good enough. At least she has plenty of potential for improvement. There are guys of 60 and 70 years of age trying to qualify. They haven't much as much potential for improvement. That's what the US Open is about. Anyone who has the required handicap can give it a go. It is sport at it's best, in my opinion.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
she definately has the potential to improve, but all the time she is trying to be a fashion model for nike etc... i think that could hold her back a bit.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Are you saying you have to look frumpy to play well. I would think comfort is the key and if you can have comfort and great looks, what's the harm?
Maybe she should dress like the PGA icons. They certainly know how to dress for success. Oh, wait a minute, isn't Tiger a trendsetter in Nike clothing. Guess his taste in clothing hasn't hurt him, now has it?

i ain't saying that at all, what i was getting at is she's a 16 year old girl, trying to look mature and fashionable (maybe nike has told her how too look even?) when her real aim should be to try to win tournaments. Bringing Tiger into it is not really a point, Men and Women are different, and to me it appears she's trying to be seen or made to look like a sex symbol or something. Tiger can wear whatever he wants, but you wont get 1000s of women turning on the t.v. to see him wearing his t shirt and trousers. infact i think Tiger is the smartest golfer, but he aint gonna win any fans by being the smartest.
all she needs is to mature naturally, instead of rushing life and trying to look 10 years older.
just my opinions ofcourse.

Mr. olson3, Michelle has applied at Stanford. I presume she knows the requirements. She is not applying as a golfer, but as a student. I hear it's a pretty good school , quite a bit better than Arizona as a matter of fact. If you're going to throw out some off-hand comment about the academic quality, or presumed lack of, of Hawaii's school, the least you could do would be to back them up with.......something....anything. The net is full of such comparitive info.

I really don't understand the reasoning behind the get an lppa win argument. Would you actually support her pga attempts, if she were to win in her next lpga tournament. I doubt it.
On the clothing issue, I share your concerns. I used to worry about her maybe taking too much on. Having too many sponsors commitments, doing photo shoots when she should be practicing. Actually I am still a little concerned by it.
However, her performances have been excellent, so as long as she keeps delivering the goods on the golf course, I won't critisise her appearances, throwing baseballs or wearing watches and smiling for the camera.
By the way, if she were to go along the lines of fhm or mens mags photo shoots, I doubt even my fan loyalty would stand up to that.

Not to argue the relative merits of schools, but I was recently in Hawaii and because of my interest in the history of the state (of which Michelle's school happens to be a shining part), I toured Punahou.
It happens to be the largest independent school in the US, with 99% of its graduates going on the higher ed. Excelling there is a credit to Ms Wie and I don't think we ought to denigrate her accomplishments.
If you'd like to verify my statements, here is the website for this exceptional facility - www.punahou.edu.

Dear LG - every 16 year old girl I know wants to look mature and fashionable. Shopping for clothes and jewelry, wearing cutting edge fashions, and looking as grown up as possible is normal and common in that age group! Have you looked around at the mall lateley? Michelle is actually a bit on the conservative side compared to 16 year olds in general!

Now that is FUNNY!!! Of course we women tune in to admire Tiger's physical attributes and style as well as his golfing prowess! We may not talk about a gorgeous body as much as you guys do but you'd best believe we're looking at it!!!!
There's also that little matter of the 10 million dollars she accepted from Nike that prevents her from playing in any "amateur" events.
She only got 5 million from Nike. Another 5 million from Sony.
On that issue, she was supposed to be the 3rd highest sportswoman behind Sharapova and Serena Williams.
But Serena Williams barely plays tennis anymore, so surely she can't be getting that much anymore.
And she's got alot more than that 10 million since. She signed deals worth 5 million in Korea, but maybe that's over a longer period of time. Then the Omega deal, what was that worth?
Vijay Singh is a complaining pain in the neck anyway...he would visit the restaurant I worked in regularly when he was in town, and was NEVER happy and gave everyone a hard time...not my favorite player...
Jean Van de Veldt is not a PGA Tour member and his complaint was with the R & A....not the PGA Tour.
what does that matter, its still the same arguments a PGA tour member could make. it makes even more sense seeing as his argument was for her being invited to a EUROPEAN tour event.

no, your probably right, but it would make me think again though. my argument is for her to try to qualify once she is improved enough, and one win this week in a MATCH PLAY event doesnt mean she has improved. infact i already think she's a world class player, it may be her mental game that needs improvement but with all the attention she gets it makes it double hard to imrove anything.

Dear DK.
yeah your probably right about 16 year old girls trying to act and look as grown up as possible, but that doesn't mean i have to agree with it. call me old fashioned (you probably will) but i think girl's or boys under the age of 21 are still children.
as for your Tiger Woods obsession, dont even think im gonna try to understand what goes through a woman's head.
Dear LG - as to what goes thru a woman's head, probably better not to try to understand! LOL However, please do not limit my or any other female's obsession with well-toned and attractive male bodies to Mr. Woods! He was the male player mentioned in your post and the most obvious but, trust me, we also enjoy looking at all the handsome young men. LOL
