On the Bonny banks of Loch Lomond

Scottish Open is off to an interesting start, with two minor players on top after round one. One is a sponsors invite, the other failed to keep his card last year, although he did win earlier this year.

Darren Clarke shows flashes of form , buthis continuing worries outside of golf make his season a rollercoaster ride. Luke Donald looks solid as usual. Impressive round by Hale Irwin, with a birdie blitz on the back nine.

Shame they play this tournament on an American style course a week before a links Open. Money talks but this event should be on an old style links ,like Carnastie or Troon .That's why many USA based players spend this week in Ireland (they still wax lyrically about Payne Stewart over a Guinness) rather than play the event.

Hope Freddie's back improves, he is always welcome over here . he was spotted with Ernie in the crowds at Wimbledon.

Johan Edfors has won twice this year, including the BMW at Wentworth.

Loch Lomond is meant to be one of the 10 best courses in the UK. Not really great preparation for the Open though. I'd love to get a game there.

it was the British Masters at the Belfry mate. David Howell won the BMW ahead of Simon Khan and Miguel Angel Jimenez.

You're right of course. They were on TV back-to-back and I got confused. Oops.

Anyway, were Edfors to win again he would be right in there for the Ryder Cup team.

i couldn't turn him away from the ryder cup team, very strong player when he plays well but only since this year really, i think his first win done him a world of good. and i dont know why but he seems to always play well with the BBC cameras on him.

From what I've seen of Loch Lomond on tv, it is a beautiful course, and not without some tests of skill. Hopefully they'll be televising it tomorrow morning here onthe Golf Channel.

watch out for Mr. Remesy of France, only plays well a few times a year now, but if he's got his game this weekend he will be in the mix.
same as Mr. Castano of Spain and ofcourse Edfors of Sweden.

Darren Clarke is hitting the ball brilliantly. Everytime I got to see him on TGC, it was fairways and greens. Hope he keeps it up and takes the trophy home.

if he plays like he did today he won't be winning it, a level par round like today might even put him out of the 10, and in recent months he aint been able to finish the job off when in similar positions.

any guesses for anyone who might make a good run from within the field and snatch the title?
if i was gonna guess, id probably say Garcia is due a good run, maybe tomorrow.
its not often Jaidee has a good run outside of Asia, maybe he will go out and enjoy sunday.
and also Remesy is enjoying himself out there, a good run and maybe he can snatch it.
theres the likes of Bjorn, Clarke, Els, Clark, Donald, Montgomerie, Westwood and Poulter who are in with chances. will be a great sunday, i can guarantee that.

I agree with your assessment of Garcia. I would love to see him begin to fulfill the legacy his talent affords him. Also, The Big Easy is always a fave (he's a Titleist player) and I'd like to see him back in form like the good old days. Smooooooth!
Lasty, Thomas Bjorn has much game. Although for some reason I seem to think I heard somewhere that he is not a closer of big tournaments. Is that the case? Maybe I am wrong. He always seems to be in the "thick" of things at the events I've seen him play.

he's won some decent tournament's and also lost some decent tournament's which he probably should of won, but more importantly this week is that his first tournament win 10 years ago was at Loch Lomond in this tournament which does go down well. he will win a Major soon, he's been close a few times.

Another tournament where DC has two brilliant rounds and then fades , his concentration levels are undderstandably variable nowadays. One tournament is going to se him peak for four days and he will win by a country mile.
