The Open Championship

The Open Championship is the oldest of the four major championships in men's golf. It is sometimes colloquially, but incorrectly, referred to as the British Open - especially in the United States of America - perhaps to avoid confusion with the U.S. Open. Each year the event is hosted by one of several prestigious golf clubs in the United Kingdom; however, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A) administers The Open regardless of its site. It is always played on a links course.

The Open Championship is played the weekend of the 3rd Friday in July, and is the third major to take place each year following The Masters and the U.S. Open and before the PGA Championship. It has been an official event on the PGA TOUR since 1995, which means that the prize money won in the Open by PGA Tour members is included on the official money list. In addition, all Open Championships before that date have been retrospectively classified as PGA Tour wins, and the list of leading winners on the PGA Tour has been adjusted to reflect this. The European Tour has recognized The Open as an official event since its first official season in 1972.

until a year ago i swore i'd never play golf. now i swear i want to play golf nearly all the ****** time. so i did not know that the British Open had another name, for people across that Pond. Btw, I didn't get it, i had to look it up. Dohhh! heck I didn't even know there were four majors until today. again, a year ago i'd never understood watching golf on TV...now i dig it, esp. the Lades PGA...

A number of the pros quote the knoledgeable crowds as a reason for enjoying the Open. Links courses require a higher level of shot making and more finesse than a normal course with soft responsive greens. Local players who play the course appreciate how difficult it is to control a ball downwind with hard bouncy fairways and greens. You can not measure difficulty by yardage alone
