Supposedly, more than a year ago, Nick Faldo was covering the tournament from the broadcast booth when Tiger whiffed an iron shot, describing it as a "complete fan and a miss" (which was true). And then since that time Tiger has had a grudge against Faldo. But does this make any sense? Is it a crime to tell the truth about a shot that was laughable by the standards of professional players? Was he a bit too gleeful about seeing The Great Striped One mess up? Or is there some other deeper background to the story and that was only one instance?
Stephen Ames criticized Tiger for his wild tee shots (which was true) but that was immediately before a one-on-one match play event. So therefore Tiger had a chip on his shoulder and wanted to crush Ames in their match (and he did). So that one is understandable. But to hold a vendetta indefinitely for years against someone, and against a relatively harmless aging player like Faldo, and in a situation where both are playing against the course and not specifically against the person they are paired with ... that part I don't follow. So what is it really about ?
Reading the articles about this contretemps, looks to me as if Faldo is thoroughly enjoying the attention and keeps uping the ante with his remarks. Maybe he likes getting all this press?
I read that Faldo had criticized Tiger's new swing and that was at the root of Tiger's alleged animosity towards Faldo. It isn't match play and I don't think it will affect eithers play come Thursday.

i only know as much as you do mate with regards to Tiger's swing, it probably goes far beyond this.
but at the end of the day, Faldo is one of my favourites ever, Tiger is one of my favourites now. i dont know who i support, seems Tiger is being childish about it (when asked about whether he will shake Faldo's Hand, Tiger replied something along the lines of ''its up to him'') which tells me its gotta go far further than a bit of commentary made by Faldo.

Takes one to know one though (being childish that is). Faldo is known from his heyday to have been one of the most unpleasant guys to play a round of golf with, as well as known to hold grudges. I love his commentary in the announcer's chair, however. It seems as though he's mellowed out quite nicely through the years.

Faldo has never been one to stand down from anyone, he's doing his job (commentary) and doing it well. i dont think its about getting attention (although Faldo can be Attention seeking, i mean if winning all those tournament's isnt attention seeking then i dont know what is ), i just think its being taken out of proportion by the newspapers etc... trying to light up a bigger feud between the two, its a game of golf and it shouldn't affect any of there play at The Open.
Actually, in his press conference, he was asked if the extent of their communication would be the handshake at the first and last hole and Tiger said that was up to Faldo. I heard it as not that he wouldn't shake hands but rather than any other chatting would start with Nick. He also commented that when they played together previously, there wasn't much talk as they were both concentrating on their games.
Nick has since made comments to the effect that 1) in his best years, he'd beat Tiger and 2) he chatter to Tiger all day if it was going to bother him.
As I said earlier, I think Nick is enjoying all the attention and is keeping the pot stirred. Fine, if that's what he wants to do, but he should be a little circumspect. After all, he is basically media now and being on the bad side of the world's #1 isn't the best way to get the story!
With Faldo's help, the media now has something sexy to write about since Phil blew their chance of raving on about the Mickel-slam! LOL

why you calling me childish then mate?, Tiger's words were childish when asked about the situation, why can't people just handle it like men.

ok your probably right about the handshake (i only flicked through an article, but i bet Tiger said it with hatred in his voice), but i dont think Faldo cares about Woods being number 1, Faldo may not be all that pleasant, but he wouldn't of made those comments had woods not of reacted over a very truthful comment made my Nick.
Article kinda reviews the entire situation and I stand by my opinion that Faldo is fanning the flames! Helping out his fellow media with a story, maybe? Who knows but it's not a good idea to tweak a Tiger's tail!
I wasn't calling YOU childish. I was calling FALDO childish. Sorry for the confusion.
oh right. yep i agree Faldo can be very childish at times in this sort of situation, but you've gotta love Nick and his comments which are most of the time said in good humour (nowdays). i dont know how far it goes between the two other than what ive heard, but no doubt it will be entertaining to view and hear what they both have to say in the interviews throughout the Open.
I don't remember Faldo saying he'd beat Tiger, but if he did say that I'd be pretty mad too if I were Tiger. Faldo was a great player, but Tiger (if motivated) would mop the floor with him just as he would do with many other past greats of the game (I'm talking prime vs. prime here...no "prime of Nick" vs "less than prime of Tiger"). Tiger in his prime (2000) would slaughter 99% of golf's greatest players. Jack would probably be the only one who could stand up to him, and even then, he'd probably get beat.

Yeah, like I said before, I enjoy Faldo's commentary a lot. He's got a nice, dry sense of humor (very sarcastic and witty). He's without doubt the 2nd best announcer out there in my opinion, right behind Johnny Miller.

Faldo isn't gonna back down, nor is woods. i do not believe Faldo is doing it solely for Attention or to make a story, he has done a few things similar throughout his playing career, it isn't a new thing, i just think thats the way Nick is.

hmmm another Nicklaus/Woods debate, i think if they were both pro at the same time and the same age with the same equipment, it would be too close too call.
