-3 after 16 and three back of the leader...No a bad position to be in going to the 17th. By the way, here's the link for the leaderboard (real time) http://www.opengolf.com/leaderboard/default.sps
Looks like somewhere in the neighborhood of 32 players will break 70 today. Birdie at the par 5 18th would leave Woods in a 14-way tie (yeah, FOURTEEN!) for 5th.
In good position. Wasn't his best ball striking day, but his strategy was to play conservative and avoid any big numbers. His only bogey was the 3-jack at the first. 11/14 fairways, 12/18 Greens, 26 putts through 17 holes (on in 2 at 18th).
Mission accomplished for day one.
A couple of oft quoted stats:
Tiger is six for six when leading after 36 holes in majors
Tiger is ten for ten when leading after 54 holes in majors
So do I. I'm just saying he won't win this week if he doesn't make some decent length putts. Did you see all the 8-10 footers (and beyond) that Phil made in his round today? Ball striking can only take you so far. If you're 20-25 feet away on every hole and you're not making any of them, you probably aren't going to be winning a potential shootout this week (I think the winner will be -20...the par 5's alone at this point will get Tiger to -15 assuming he birdies all of them, but he'll make some more bogies too so he's gotta birdie some par 4's and/or 3's). Tiger is hitting the ball solid so far. He's only hit one loose approach shot to the right, and the rest of his iron shots have checked up quicker than he expected. But as I said, ball striking will only take you so far. He hit it great in the final round of the Masters but left about 4 or more shots on the course because of terrible putting. Drive for show, putt for dough!
EDIT: Finally, he makes a nice length birdie putt at the 9th! About time. 3 par-5's on the back nine, so he should manage a 68 today as long as he keeps hitting it solid.
well he sure finished great -5, what an eagle putt, im sticking with my pick for the winner - tiger
Great finish, not only for Tiger but I'll bet the Networks are overjoyed he is in the hunt!
I missed watching on TV (work), and the replay tonight will be missed due to golf league. Maybe tomorrow I'll get to leave early and catch some of it.
I think the British Open is one of the most captivating Majors to watch. Nature sets the course conditions, and from what I see the courses don't need to be doctored-up for the Open competition.
A question for anyone who has played some of the British Open courses - is it true you play the same course in the same condition the pro's play them? E.G., same length, fairways, rough, greens, etc?

that's a very good question, i would like to know that myself. when mr. geeza comes back on, he'll answer it. he'll answer anything, just like mikey.

And as usual for him this year, the putter is his downfall. He won't miss the cut, but he definitely won't win putting like that.
I still think he can win putting like that. 27 putts for Tiger, 31 putts for the leader after r1 and the leader hit two more GIR than Tiger. If he get's that putter red hot over the next 3 days it's a one horse race.
OK, when I left to go to my summer school class, El Tigre was -2 through 12 holes. I figured he'd birdie 16 and 18 and hoped he'd par the rest. Well, he met and surpassed my expectations. After that 3-putt early on, he really settled down and I'm very pleased with his start. He's right where he needs to be.
Now, someone on here has GOT to give me a nice description of his eagle at 18. How long was the putt he made, etc.? Also, I'm curious if he hit any drivers on the last 6 holes? I know he had a 200 yard shot into the 12th, which indicates he probably should have hit 3-wood at least on that one. He hit a great shot there, but still, you don't wanna be hitting 200 yard approaches into the wind too often. Anyway, details please! Thanks.

ive never played an Open course, but to my knowledge, few of them have set members tees (ladies, old boys etc...) and set professional tees. though im pretty sure St Andrews has only 2 sets of tees, the ladies and the normal tees. maybe someone can add to this, but im pretty sure Carnoustie, Hoylake etc... have 4 different set tee's.

i can't see it being a one horse race, Tiger would need to be in his prime form to make this a one horse race, and i can't see it myself. Tiger may win but i reckon it will be a close one, i dont think Tiger will be in the lead going into the weekend and i dont think he will be in the lead going into sunday, but after sunday afternoon, i'm not so sure.
He hit one driver on the 16th which he severly hooked into the next fairway, the crazy man made birdie
HaHa. Thanks for the details. I have a feeling he woulda birdied the 10th if he had hit it anywhere but that bunker. Seemed like he had his short game going very well today (except for the 2 footer at the first obviously).
yeah he made birdie, but it was a drive well over 300yds and a lucky lie in next doors fairway, next time he may not be so lucky.
Well, he hooked it into the "thick" rough at the first hole and had a perfect lie. Luck really doesn't have much to do with it this week. The rough isn't that penal at all, especially compared to Winged Foot for example. The only luck that comes into play this week will have to do with whether a shot bounces out of bounds or what happens when/if it goes in a bunker.
Tiger ended the day tied for second at -5/one back. One Bogey, 4 birdies and one eagle. Not a bad day, all things considered. I don't know how many times I've started the round with a bogey and had that color the entire round. Tiger, seemingly, didn't have that problem.
