I've never been particularly impressed with him, though he's o.k. as a foil for Faldo's barbs. He so often seems to be a bit off with his opinions. Today right out of the shoot he was talking about how the doubters were wrong about this course, because no one had shot a 62 yet...not even midway through the first round. Um... hello Paul.. 91 guys are at par or better, not that there is anything wrong with that but come on. Personally I don't mind the scoring. I just enjoy watching these guys deal with these rather bizaare(to this yank) conditions. Why do they have to puff up its challenges ? I've always been particularly fascinated with The Open courses. My dream is to someday play some of them. If they could just sharpen the video feed it would probably be my favorite major.
He's my least favorite commentator of the group. Today a good example:
"Carl Petterson is one of those guys you see near the top of the leaderboard .... And then, it's like, where did he go, dude? Oh, dude, did I just say 'dude' on national television"?

I was thinking the exact same thing when he said that. Low and behold, the first round leader turned out to be a player from an afternoon group. No, he didn't shoot 62, but it did prove (along with Tiger and others who did really well in the afternoon) that the course OVERALL was setup for good scoring today and probably will be all week long. I think the number of guys under par is more impressive than if one guy goes out and shoots 62. Just look at all the folks at -2 to -5. That is a lot of players!
I get the feeling from listening to Azinger that he feels the need to speak and try to contribute something even when he doesn't have anything of value to say. But then again, I've got a pretty low opinion of most "color analysts" on golf anyway. These guys have all played the tour so you'd expect some kind of insightful commentary based on their experiences, instead of "when you're that close to the sides of these bunkers it's tough for anyone to get out cleanly"

Yeah, you did just say that, Zinger-dude-man.
I heard that too. He is a bit goofy at times.
I think this is it for him, at least for a while. With no more golf on ABC next year, does he have a new announcing job?

I'd be surprised. I actually find him uncomfortable to listen to at times. It's a tribute to Faldo's skills to be able to play off of some of the junk he says.
I tell you one guy who has improved IMO, though. Tirico didn't know jack when he started, pretty much admitted as much, and has developed competancy. I'm not in love with him, but he has gotten better. Take him over Boomer any day of the week.
Zinger just said something worthwhile on the back nine on Sunday... that it is unfair for the R&A to put Tiger and Sergio on the clock, since they are dealing with more cameras and a larger crowd than the others. IMO, anyway.
^^ Faldo is funny man. Zinger went oops I was explaining the wrong hole. Faldo went "buzz off mate its my hole anyway", some good fun in that booth
That was very funny by Nick.
Just now, on Tiger's approach on 17, Zinger says "look at how close Tiger stands to the ball." and that is it. So, all the weekend hackers will start standing closer to the ball, having no idea WHY they should. Zinger didn't elaborate at all.
I like Zinger, but he was way off several times this week. When he came back on after Aliss left (why, oh why? ), he was talking about what club Tiger would hit off the tee, when Tiger was already in the fairway. Then the "close to the ball" comment on the 17th as well. I doubt he'll latch on anywhere else when ABC's coverage goes kaput this fall.
