Purple Patch???

Seconds before Tiger made his putt from off the 18th green, Faldo said something to the effect of, "Seems fitting with all of the purple paint on the green that Tiger finds himself in a Purple Patch."

He was trying to make a joke, no one laughed. But what in the world was he talking about? What is a Purple Patch?

I thought that it must be a "British thing"... otherwise I have no clue what Nick was trying to say.

To have a purple patch means to have an exceptionally good period in, say, that game of football. The origin here is a little obscure but could be based on the fact that Roman noblemen wore purple togas. They were clearly exceptional people, hence the analogy. Alternatively the emphasis may be on the patch since purple and other multicoloured areas were sometimes set into ancient illuminated texts and other ventures in order to make them look more distinguished than they truly were. In Horace's De Arte Poetica he says "Often to weighty enterprises and such as profess great objects, one or two purple patches are sewn on to make a fine display in the distance".
Here 'ya go . . .

Thanks lwc ! It was a pretty good one by Nick then, though I'm not sure what good it does when most don't know what you're talking about.

Nick wasn't calling the incident a Purple Patch. He was saying that Tiger was in a Purple Patch.

For some reason when he said that, all I could think of was that purple dude character from the Strawberry Shortcake dolls that my sister had about 20 years ago! What was his name???

'Purple Patch' is a common phrase used in Australia as well and I have no idea where it originates from. It is used in all sports.

We have some poorly behaved and over served "idiots" attending our golf events here in America but for all the talk about knowledgeable, courteous, UK golf fans I certainly didn't see it today. That's a real shame.
LG, I had similar thoughts and was happy to see you express them so well. I considered a thread but decided I would probably be too assertive and decided to hush. You did it much more politely than I probably would have!

theres the idiot golf fans all over the world, it seemed some of them at the Open showed no respect to the players at all today, probably some of those first outing to the watch the golf, but that is no excuse as there are plenty of warning's out there and they showed no common sense or respect to the players. its only the odd few, as it is in America, but on the Final day of the Open where it could be the biggest day of someone's (a golfer's) life, it is ridiculous really, but it will happen from time to time.

no need to do it politely, they were total idiots. say all you want about them, aslong as you dont think all the English (or the UK residents) are the same. ive nothing good to say about those muppets out there today or during any tournament, wherever it is held.
