One of the most disappointing performances at the Open was Daly's 8 at the 36th hole to miss the cut . To play so well for 35 holes and then implode on the 'last' must have been shattering for the man. Let's hope he fights back at his very next start.
I don't think Daly has enough heart to be "shattered" over anything that occurs on a golf course.
i bet he had a lot of cigarette's and booze on friday night. he has a big heart, but i don't know how fast it beats when he walks the course. he isn't the fittest man in the world, poor old John Daly.

I like John Daly, but I can't help but feel a little sorry for him too...He's got a mentality that seems to abhor success. Almost reminded me of Tin Cup on that hole.
I don't feel sorry for the man. Matter of fact, I would imagine that his new book is more than making up for what he lost in wages by missing the cut.
I don't understand his attitude. Sometimes it's almost like he doesn't even care about winning or playing well. A couple of friends of mine think that Lehman should pick him as one of his captain's choices. I think they're nuts. The last thing our Ryder Cup team needs is a quitter.
Not saying that he's a bad guy, or a good guy for that matter. But it's almost like he's the Roy McElvoy on the pga tour. Maybe that's why so many people like him.... sometimes he can make us even look good.

Wow i cant believe you just said that. That was pretty stupid of you . I read his book and MAN has he been through some tough @$#! in his life. You might want to learn a little about the guy before you say ANYTHING about his character. You would have been dead by now if you lived thru his life. He is one awesome guy...not to mention he could ABSOLUTELY MURDER you on a golf course... I'd shut up while i was ahead.

First of all, you don't have to read the book. The only thing that the book covers a little more extensively than the interviews that he has done over the past 10 years is his wild sex life.
He has gone into more than enough detail in those interviews to inform us that he hasn't had an easy life. And, to his credit, he will admit that he didn't make it any easier on himself. But that's ultimately the bottom line. John lived a former life no different than Phil Mickelson plays US Opens on Sunday -- with no regards to consequences.
Eli Callaway was THE ONLY John Daly supporter when support was what John Daly needed most. He quit. The gambling, the drinking, etc... all of that stuff was more important. And before anyone starts talking about addictions, to this day John Daly denies that he was ever an alcoholic.
His personal life matters not to me though. I base my opinions of John Daly the golfer on his attitudes and actions on the course. I'm sure that John is a great guy to have a beer with, he will hang around and sign autographs while others walk on by, etc. And it's not that those things don't matter. They do. But the last thing he needs is someone offering him more pity. Only John Daly can make his life better, he doesn't need someone reading his book to sympathize with him.
John Daly could join me any my golfing buddies any time, and fit right in, we'd have a blast. But I think there are a lot of golfers more deserving to be picked for the Ryder Cup than John Daly.
For someone with such enormous potential and golf talent, I think he has fallen far short of what he could have accomplished had he dedicated himself more seriously. For reasons known only to him, he hasn't applied himself to golf as seriously as many of his peers have. That's not a knock on him, as long as he's happy, who are we to criticize him?

Wow - are you related to John by any chance or know him personally? You read his book and have seen him on TV a few times and you jump on a fellow forum member for questioning John Daly's character? What's with that?
I think there are far more examples of John "trashing a round" with a bad hole than there are instances of him coming through under pressure to play a great hole to win.
But the bottom line is we are all entitled to our opinions on this forum, and your response just "hit me" as being a little over-the-top.
JD is just what "The Champions" tour needs... if he lives that long. He has about 10 years to go, which would probably be the over/under for a guy in his physical condition with his habits. You'd think he'd at least want to see his kids grow up, if nothing else. I wish him well.

Lot of those situations that he went through are self-induced. He was a great player, perhaps he can turn it around but boozing, smoking, gambling, womanizing are self-induced, he did it to himself. If you want to talk about is character, lot of his misgivings says volumes about his character.
I don't dislike him, but he at times acted very strangely on the course.
Tough times? Well, lot of people on this earth have and are going through lot more difficult times than JD. At least JD has a talent to play for very large sum of purses and I'm pretty sure he will have a roof over his head and won't have to worry about when his next meal will be, unlike many who are in dire straits.
