I would pick anyone but Sergio. Not just because i can't stand the guy, but the guy chokes everytime he's up near the leaderboard on sunday. It won't be any different if he's up there this time.
As for sleeper picks, I really like Trevor Immelman. He's not a super sleeper, but he's had such a good summer and i think he could have been in contention for the british if not for his newborn.
Other guys i'd pick....
Tiger-Of course
Goosen-Slumped in June, but has gotten better week after week and is really good on par-72 courses.
Furyk-Like Immelman, is having a spectacular year and Medinah's a great course for him.
Not really a sleeper, but since it was Tiger the last time it was there in 1999 I'd say he at least has a shot. (ya think?) But as for a sleeper I'd have to give the nod to Jim Furyk...What? He's not a sleeper either? Dang, how about Zach Johnson?
Longest course in major championship history (7,561 yards).
Four par 5s.
You've got at least 3 holes that will require either hitting a big draw over trees or laying back to keep from driving through the fairway.
If you look at the stats from the 1990 US Open and the 1999 PGA, two interrelated patterns emerge. Almost everybody in contention was in the top 10 in GIR, and consequently most took 115-123 putts. It's going to be crucial to leave the ball below the pin on those severly sloped greens, and be content with lots of 2 putt pars. Most of the birdies you see will be on holes 5-10, a stretch that includes 3 of the par 5s.
Long hitter who keeps it in play, scores well on par 5s, hits a controlled draw, great ball striker who will hit lots of greens, doesn't need to be a great putter but has to avoid 3 putts by missing on the correct side.....by golly, I think Adam Scott may have found a major he can win despite his awkward ability with the flat stick.
I really have no reasoning for this other than he has looked pretty good over his last 3 tournaments, with the exception of the horrible 4th round at John Deere, but my sleeper will be David Duval.
Anyone have any sleeper picks for the PGA Championship next week?
People were writing off Sergio before the Open, it would be nice to see him rekindle his mojo at Medinah. Not much of a sleeper pick.
I am going to go with Luke Donald, Harrington, and Weir as my sleeper picks.
1. Jim Furyk - The guy had been in the mix for both the U.S and British Opens. He can make some clutch putts and he's consistent tee to green.
2. Trevor Immelman - Don't laugh he's played some consistent golf this year and he finally broke though at the Western Open. For guys who are one-plane swing advocates watch this guy's swing, it's solid.
3. Ernie Els - He gave Tiger a run for his money in rounds 2 and 3 of the Bristish Open. No, he didn't when the British Open but I get the feeling he came out that tournament of much more confident golfer. It's about time for "The Big Easy" to make some noise.
