She was in the bunker. There was a piece of moss behind her ball.
Of course you can't move the bit of moss. She didn't move it when she was setting up for the ball, but in slow motion, it was shown that on her back swing her club brushed against the bit of moss. A bit of sand trickled but the moss didn't move.
The commentators were assuming that she wouldn't get a penalty because it was done in her back swing which was part of her shot. It hadn't been decided when the coverage went off, but obviously they must have decided that it broke the rules so she got a 2 shot penalty.
She just seems to be a magnet for questionable calls. From the bees in the bush and the dropping it closer to the hole, to the moss in the bunker, it seems like every tournament something she does requires review. Is it her inexperience, or just the fact that her play is scrutinized so heavily compared to other golfers? Is that the price of being the media darling?
(This is not an attempt to say she does things wrong on purpose, or tries to get away with them. Merely an observation that she seems to get more reviews than usual.)
I haven't seen the shot yet but if she touched the moss (which was part of the bunker if it was in the bunker) on her backswing, then she did indeed commit a 2 stroke penalty. She parred in so it didn't seem to affect her too badly. Other than her score of course.
Yes she indeed touched the moss, no doubt about that.
As regards parring in, she had absolutely no idea that she would be getting a penalty until the round was over and officials took her aside to show her video footage of it.
The cameras are going to be intensely focused on Wie's every shot and therefore every possible infraction will be scrutinized. Wie has to be aware of this and must make efforts to be more careful. Fame and glory has it's price.
Sheesh, I guess. Hope this doesn't shake her up too much. I doubt it will.
Yea I doubt she even felt it , I saw it happen and I knew something looked weird but couldn't place what had actually happend. I didn't see the moss I just saw some sand be brushed up.
The 16-year-old from Hawaii hit a piece of moss in her backswing in the greenside bunker at the 14th hole. She found out after her round that she had broken rule 13-4c.
Wie wasn't aware of the rule infraction Friday until she went to sign her scorecard and was informed by officials. The sand clearly moved, and the incident was picked up by TV cameras and tournament officials.
"Well, I knew I hit the moss, but I guess I knew the rule wrong," Wie said. "I always knew from the time I started playing golf that if you swing through it, it would be OK. I knew I hit the moss but I guess I knew the rule a little bit differently.
"So it's a good learning experience. But I'm only 16."
Wie said she had no plans to read the Rules of Golf now that she has been penalized twice in less than a year.
"Well, they're not actually great reading material," she said.
why would she read it when she gets 10 million just to have some logo's on her bag. With that comment and the one above about her being only 16 from her own mouth. She is not ready to win AND she needs to stay off the pga untill she is ready to win on the lpga.
Looks like another case of her stardom biting back. the officials reviewed the VIDEO FOOTAGE. Do they tape every players every shot? Sounds hard to imagine.
Without video it would have been easy to miss. Touching moss is a tough call even with video
I think the problem might be she needs a real caddie and not her dad.
At least I think her dads her caddie. I can only imagine hoe tiger would hhave done with Earl on the bag.

I think I would ammend that to say till she DOES win on the LPGA. I know that tournament directors like to have her there because she sells more Thursday and Friday tickets but I think she needs to concentrate on winning before she tries to play any more with the big boys.

She has had a professional caddy for about a year at this stage.
