I keep telling my 14-yr old in his junior tournament that "he needs to read the rules and make sure you can use them to your advantage"....he gives me the yea yea yea routine.
If the rules is boring, try reading the decisions on the rules...some interesting stuff there (it's on the web at the usga web site).

I picked up a copy of the Golf Rules Quick Reference Guide to keep in my bag. It's waterproof, provides illustrations to help clarify rules, and is easier to use than the regular rulebook for quick reference. It won Best New Product award at the 2004 PGA Merchandise Show. Highly recommended.
Outstanding idea. In fact, let's bring the PGA Tour players division back together with the PGA of America.
I sure do miss the days when the greatest player in the history of the game was ineligible for the Player of the Year award, and couldn't compete in the Ryder Cup, all because he hadn't finished his quals on how to regrip a club.
Hyperbole? Nope, look it up, that was professional golf in the 60s.
Jack Nicklaus from 1962-68 never won POTY, never played on the Ryder Cup, all because he wasn't a PGA of America Class A Professional Golfer.
Progress, anyone?
They figured a way around that by creating the classification A3, which means Touring Professional - member of a US PGA Sanctioned Tour ie. PGA, NAtionwide, Senior, LPGA, Futures...
I read about her comment and even though she's a kid - it just comes off as she's playing a little game, and has little or no professional attitude. I seriously don't think she has any intention to go to college at all. I think she might get around to reading the rules when it costs her her first victory though.
I think various people on these boards are unaware of the number of disqualifications and penalties that happen in golf.
Take the last 4 pga tour events:
Aug. 3-6
Buick Open:
John Dal Corobbo DISQUALIFIED
July 27-30
U.S. Bank Championship:
Ben Crane DISQUALIFIED
July 20-23
B.C. Open:
Ken Green DISQUALIFIED
July 13-16
John Deere Classic
Mike Sposa DISQUALIFIED
These are only disqualifications. How many penalties were there? Loads more. However they don't make the news unless they are Tiger, Michelle, Phil or other very high profile golfers.
^^ yea i was thinking of that, my parents argue with me whether she should go to college or not, i guess her endorsement deal will carry her
If I were in her shoes my entire focus would be on improving my game and making as much on endorsements as possible while I'm still somewhat of a novelty due to my age. Maybe start taking a couple of classes at a university with a good part time distance learning program. Maybe even that would wait until early 20's.
Earlier this year in the Nissan Irish Open, Kenneth Ferrie was penalised two shots for replacing his ball after it was blown across the 14th green at Carton House.
As he had not addressed the ball yet Ferrie should have played it from its new position, but listened to the opinion of Ryder Cup player Paul McGinley who also advised him to replace it.
That led to heated accusations of gamesmanship, while another rules row erupted between Ryder Cup team-mates Padraig Harrington and Jose Maria Olazabal at the Seve Trophy in 2003 over repairing pitch marks on the green.
READ THE BOLDED BIT. SHOULD THAT NOT HAVE BEEN AN OBVIOUS RULE FOR EXPERIENCED PROS?
EVEN I KNEW THAT RULE.
I find it amazing how many tour pros don't know the rules and have to ask, or even worse understand them wrong, and do the wrong thing. The case that Rodney talks about is a good case. The players knew something happened, but understood the rule incorrectly and made a mistake.
Michelle knew she hit the moss/sand on the way back, but didn't understand the rule correctly and made a mistake.
As a club pro I was forced to take a rules exam, before being allowed to even attempt my player ability test. It wasn't an easy exam either.
I wonder after all of these mistakes by the touring pros. If Michelle hadn't been on camera when she hit the shot, she would have broken the rules and not known it, so it would have never been reported.
How many rules infractions go unnoticed during any one event, and how many of them could have changed history??? Scary thought.

yeah that was Mcginley and Poulter, (i dont like Ferrie much anyway), to top it all off he then went on to blame Mcginley and Poulter for his penalty, for as you said (un)sportsmanship, in my opinion it was him in the wrong for putting it on the players in his group and not an official. many, many similar things have happened over the years.
who in the heck is ken green, mike sposa, and john dal corobbo, ohhh yea real big names there
before being DQ'ed the mentioned players had all missed the cut (or 95% certain of missing) anyway, and not too bothered, so they wasnt really good examples. but it doesn't matter if they are big names or not, they are still professional's, the same as Woods, Mickelson and Els, so they are in the same boat.

That's not what she said, and she IS JUST A KID. You sound like you have some growing up to do.

saying she is just a kid isn't a point though as she is playing the same game/sport with the adults. she is gonna have to take as much stick as anyone else in her position whether she is 16/17 or 35.
although i know it wasn't what she said, and shouldn't of been brought up in a thread in this way.
