Annika's won the Vare Trophy six times which is the annual award for the best scoring average. Grace Park won it a couple years ago when she had her spectacular season. I'm sure they both value the trophy. It's like looking at the season as one big tournament and the person with the lowest scores all year long wins. It's not exactly this, but the Best scoring average = Best golfer. Wie would win this award if it only counted the tournaments she's been able to play in so far this year.
The thing is though, that a couple shots here or there and she could have won several majors already and she's only 16. Something would have to go terribly wrong with her game or health for her to not win on the LPGA very soon and not win a major by her 21st birthday. She was within a shot or two of winning 5 out of the last 6 majors.
I completely agree. What are the chances she doesn't have multiple wins by her 19th birthday? Slim. What are the chances she doesn't win an LPGA major by her 21st birthday? Slim. But man if it turns out that way for whatever reason, it's not poppa bear that will have to be answering the tough questions. I really don't think pops did her any favors.

Yeah, I know - it does have value and it's a great accomplishment, but I would rank it second behind a victory.
It was a bonehead club selection. The situation obviously called for a putter. A caddie is supposed to assist in that situation, especially with a player as young and inexperienced as Michelle. If it had been my call there would have been a very short conversation with the caddie sometime after the round.
Me - "Did you try to talk her out of the wedge?"
if caddie answers "No", I say "we won't be needing your services any longer".
if caddie answers "Yes", I say "Try a little harder next time".
No I am not kidding. The decision likely cost her a shot at the playoff.
Turn it around, though:
"Michelle, you sure that's a good play?"
"Yes."
Then say she holes it. After the round, "Hey, caddy boy - nice call questioning my shot selection. You're fired."
It's ultimately the player's decision. Some player-caddies have that relationship where the caddy can question the pro, some don't. We don't know what their relationship was like. But to say he should get canned because she made a bad decision is rediculous.
I dont know guys this is really a hard thing to believe. I have 0 idea how she could fire her caddy and not have the professional appearence to tell her caddy herself. She wants us to believe shes a professional golfer and yet she cant even fire her caddy face to face she gets her agent to do it. I hope to god that hes on the bag for the winning golfer her next tournament. It would really make her think before she makes bonehead decisions.
I actually saw an interview where the guy asked him about that (whether he really said that), and he was like, "What? You think I'm crazy? No way would I hang that around my kid's neck."
Golf Digest - "After Tiger's third Amateur victory, you were quoted as saying that he could have more impact on the world than Gandhi."
Earl Woods - "I would like to have it stated that I did not say that. I consider myself a reasonably intelligent person. But I will say unequivocally that Earl Woods is not stupid enough to hang a moniker like that on his son--or anybody else."
Golf Digest - "How did you intend for that to come out?"
Earl Woods - "That Tiger is as charismatic and would have an impact upon the world, in a humanitarian aspect, very similar to that of Gandhi."
Earl was a publicity hound and blowhard. BJ pales in comparison.

He'd proven nothing on a professional level, though he'd played in a number of events. His professional record was no where near as impressive as Michelle's before he got the Nike deal.

True this is comparing apples and oranges, but who did Tiger beat before he got paid ?

So you haven't argued that she shouldn't have cashed in ? Then we agree on this point I guess.

No more ridiculous than making such a big deal over her doing something that is done all the time. ALL THE TIME.... and nobody on this board knows what the normal protocol is for the situation, though many pretend to. That's ridiculous ... this whole thread is ridiculous.

He'd proven himself a winner on every level he ever played at and hit the ball 60 yards past everyone else. Sure, everyone (myself included) considers Michelle a sure thing - we knew Tiger was a sure thing. There was no reason not to expect him to continue to do on the professional level what he did as an amateur - to continue doing things nobody else had done before.

If I remember, I think you have kids. I think it's Pappy Wie who's cashed in. Would you think your 16 year old wise enough to weigh the potential pitfalls of signing such a contract? I think they (the contracts) represent an awful lot of pressure to hang on a 16 year old.

Again, I'm not saying she should have done it - c'mon, she's 16. But sending an agent and issuing a press release? That's low.

Nobody knows anything. Of course it's easy to say that everyone knew Tiger would dominate now.

Not knowing the future.. I'm sorry I don't have the powers of some of the Carnac-The-Magnificent wannabes here , it would have been irresponsible to leave that kind of money laying on the table. The girl is set for life, regardless of what happens. If she's good enough, she'll have a long and successful career (that's my bet, it's not as if she's stunk it up so far), if not she's still set financially for life. Geez she had a mediocre tournament. She finished 26th... Oh.... MY .... GOD..

NOT looking for an argument in parental differences and such, but the world is full of *child* stars, prodigys, etc.... that are now working low paying jobs. I myself have no doubt that given time to *season* Wie will be one of the top players in the LPGA. But instead of treating her like a kid in an adults world I think she should be treated as a professional, after all isnt that what she is, if she is old enuff to make decisions regarding part of her career, then she should be old enuff to make all of them.

You'll never see Michelle flipping burgers and she already is one of the top players in the LPGA. You can look it up.
On the golf channel a little while ago they were explaining what happened. It seems Wie and her Dad flew out to the location of the next tournament the night before. The caddie and the agent, who are good friends, remained behind and were scheduled to fly out together the next morning. Late that evening Wie and her Dad called and informed the agent of their decision. The agent and the caddie had arranged to meet at the airport one hour before the flight and the agent told him at that time. It's not like they brought in the agent to be the heavy so it's not as bad as it has been made out to be.
I still think that if she made the decision to fire him her father should have made her be the one to tell him. She may only be 16 but firing someone is an adult decision and the adult action is to is to face the person and tell them to their face. I think that is especially true in a situation like this where she worked so closely with him.
Another commentator made the point that she is 16 and it's likely that she will go through a number of caddies and agents over the next few years until she has a team she is comfortable with. He pointed out that Tiger replaced all of the people his father had hired with his own choices once he got older.
Just out of curiosity..... all you big wie supporters. Do you think she is going to win her next time out or even this year because of this new caddie ? I really hope gulbis and creamer step up there games to make sure MW remains a bust.
She has not done anything that I know of to get that big contract. Tiger won his first year. Lebron (which I thought was over hyped, but not as bad as wie) performed his first year, didn't win it all but showed he was the real deal. Wie will be out of the sport in less then 5 years. She has no passion and no reason to keep playing. If you were 16 and had 40 million for doing nothing, would you really want to get up and practice to earn your 200,000 paycheck on the lpga. Didn't think so. you have to have the fire in your eyes to keep working after being paid, and I don't see the competitive spirt in her at all.

She's 16. She has a half dozen top 5s in majors already. Just the fact that you thought LeBron was over-hyped is a pretty good indication of your powers of perception in this matter. You say she has no passion...based on what ? You pretend to know what motivates her. Based on what ? LeBron has won nothing. Michelle hasn't even been given the opportunity to compete every week her first year.
