This was a non-event. It's been happening for years. The galleries around the greens used to be Arnie's 15th club. On a similar note, though, does anyone remember a drive that Tiger hit a few years ago in a major that looked to be headed for serious trouble way off the left fairway. A fan was chasing furiously after it and the cameras lost sight of both behind a structure and some trees. When we next saw the ball it was in a perfect lie/line to the green, nowhere near where it seemed to be headed. Sorry for the obscure OT, but I just wondered if anyone else remembered it.
Yup, that was either on the 18th hole in regulation or the 3rd playoff hole (18th hole) at Valhalla during that epic battle with Bob May.

Thanks Dormie. That must have been it. All I could remember was that it was a major and it was a crucial situation. They didn't make a big deal out of it and never commented on whether the fan had moved the ball, but it sure looked very suspicious to me.
I was at Valhalla and saw the ball the entire time. It went up a rotted tree and paused and came back out onto the cart path and rolled down the hill. Noone touched the ball but some guy about 15 yards from me spotted it and started chasing it down.

Are you sure that your vision wasn't obscured by the orange & black colored sunglasses you were wearing at the time ?
In the Ryder Cup in Brookline I believe, the Europeans had reason to believe that one of the marshalls at the side of the fairway stomped on the ball and plugged it into some muck.

I remember that they DID make a pretty big deal about it. They showed the rolling ball replay about 50 times before Tiger got to the ball to play it. The problem was, there were only like 2 camera views of it and both lost sight of the ball for about 3 seconds. And then you just see the thing cruising down that hill.

I don't know about that but at Brookline on the last hole of the match between J Leonard and JM Olazabal after JL holed a long putt the American fans rushed onto the green to congratulate JL ignoring Olie who had yet to putt to square the match. Olie subsequently missed the putt and the match. A lot of the Europeans later described the incidence as the biggest disgrace in Ryder cup history.

I wouldn't call Ollie's missed putt a disgrace. That's being a little harsh on one of the best players Europe has ever produced. It's all just part of the game!

They didn't describe the missed putt as a disgrace. It was the behaviour of the American fans which was described as a disgrace that rushed on the putting green stepping all over Ollie's line before Ollie putted out.
