Rating the Ryder Cup Rookies

Zach Johnson - most likely of the four to play 3/4 matches. He definitely has the game, and I could see him in future Ryder Cups. It's surprising he hasn't won more. Reminds me of Stewart Cink, Jeff Maggert, Chad Campbell.

Vaughn Taylor - gradually gets better. Confidence is an issue. I see him in better ball with his putting. Pair him with someone like Verplank, Toms, or Campbell, and he may do well. He may play in 3 matches.

J. J. Henry - worries me. I see him in 2 matches. I don't know much about him. He was a journeyman pro of the Brett Quigley, Skip Kendall type until he won. May be in mop-up duty with Wetterich. Either he or Wetterich seem to be the weakest link.

Brett Wetterich - very streaky. Earned most of his points in a 6 week stretch between Houston and Memorial. If he plays his career golf, he may be good for 3/4 matches. Putting is his Achilles heel. If he plays like he does most of the time, he may be in mop-up duty with J.J. Henry and a sacrificial lamb for singles.

I like Zach Johnson, but the other guys worry me. Wetterich hasn't played good since the Memorial. That was like 3 months ago. Henry's had a couple good finishes, but hasn't been very consistent this year. I honestly don't know much about Vaughn Taylor. I'm trying to figure out how he snuck in the top 10 to begin with.

He won last year for seond career tour win, had a few top 10's last year and six top 10's this year including a tie for 4th at the Buick. He ranks about 10th in putting.

I'd like to see them all play 3 matches plus singles.

What, you think we've been having success rolling out "proven veterans"?

I want to see some giant killers slay the favored Euros. What's good for the goose....

they are all great players, who have been playing well recently to be where they are.
Wetterich would be my only worry from what i watched of him just slashing his ball about like a spoilt baby at the PGA would be my biggest worry, it was the 9th hole and if he went on a birdie run the cut could have been made (or atleast try to make it), i liked Wetterich and his game until what i watched at the PGA, it kind of made me tense up a bit when all these players on similar scores are trying there hardest to get some birdies on there card, he is slashing it about with no thought's and taking 3 or 4 strokes to advance the ball 10 feet from the rough. it was probably a one off and won't happen again, but that is just not the kind you want in your team, he may well go out and have a 100% record in the Ryder cup, but i would be worrying about him a bit. The other 3 id be happy to have in my team, and will probably strengthen your team, atleast you know they will be trying there hardest (as will Wetterich, but i am worried about him and his mental approach).

I expect Zach Johnson to do well for the US - he's a fairly straight hitter who might go well with a big name in the foursomes. Taylor has been pretty solid all year so he might see some duty. I won't be surprised if Henry and Wetterich get a token outing Friday and Saturday.

How about Friday OR Saturday instead of Friday AND Saturday?

Zach's a good guy who should make a heck of a teammate. He doesn't handle big-time pressure very well...yet...so we shouldn't put him in a position where he's The Guy. He could do very well with Phil, I think, but that is likely Chris DiMarco's position.

I'm not worried at all about Vaughn Taylor. A very solid player who keeps getting better. With the proper encouragement he may turn out to be an unsung hero.

I am very concerned about Henry and Wetterich.

Zach might be good with David Toms or Scott Verplank.
