Dormie Bank Championship!
Wait......I mean Deutsche Bank Championship!
Fear NOT fellow Golf Rewinders that this is still a relatively new event. Dormie is here to provide you with endless knowledge of this tournament in it's 4th season. This tournament is held at the brand new, built-for-this-event, TPC Boston, right in my backyard!
Mrs. Dormie and I have gone to the Monday final round each of the first 3 seasons. In the first season, we saw Adam Scott play some excellent golf and win the tournament's inaugural event.
After some slight course modifications, the next year there was an incredible final round showdown between Tiger Woods and VJ. VJ took the lead for good somewhere around the 16th hole, then knocked his long-iron onto the par 5 18th in 2 for a tap in birdie to hoist the trophy. Significance of that win? Well, it marked the overtaking Tiger Woods' #1 World Ranking for the first time in 6,474 weeks (something like that).
Olin Browne won last year as he pretty much lead the entire weekend.
It was good to finally get an event back to Massachusetts. And to be able to draw the field it does, is a bonus.
I've been fortunate enough to play this incredible track twice so far. So I'll be able to guide you through it. It's a typical New England layout with a lot of deep woods, swamps, and nasty junk. I don't think there are too many events that these guys play on courses like this anymore. Most of the time on this course, if you hit the ball in the woods, it's GONE.
The first time I played it, was TWO days after the tournament ended in 2004 (VJ's win). It was closed the day after, so we were like the 3rd or 4th group out after the event. It was a wet day and the rough was basically un-playable. The pins were still tucked and the greens were like glass. Needless to say, it was a tough day for me out there. Something around a 89 or 90 rings a bell.
However, the 2nd time I played it, the course was back in member form. Reasonable rough, putt-able greens and no grandstands to worry about. We played it from the blue tees (not the Tournament tees) which measure 6679 with a 72.7/137 rating/slope. That's plenty for me. One of my most memorable rounds, not my lowest, but a SOLID 82 that day (41-41). The front 9 included the second eagle of my career to that point on hole 2. It's a great par 5 with a pond/swamp surrounding the green on 3.5 sides. Huge drive that caught the downslope off the back of the fairway bunker, 6-iron over the swamp to just past pin high, 20-footer down hill....BINGO! Eagle!
Enjoy the Deutsche Bank Championship friends!
