Pros controlling spin

During this Ryder Cup we keep hearing how the pros are struggling to take spin off the ball and we've seen a lot spin off the green and sometimes in the water but I don't understand why, they should just hit it like I do as I can't spin it to same my life lol.

Surely its harder to spin the ball than not.

They are used to hitting spin and also their swings are different the reason we dont get the spin I believe is our contact isnt as down and through as theirs.

Indeed but surely they should practice a swing that isn't as decending as there normal one for situations like this.

In order to take some spin off, the ball has to be "picked" or swept off the turf (even then the ball spins, sometimes too much)...this can be very difficult to do on tight, wet lies which is what they've been facing all week, even with lift, clean and place. Rather than take a chance of chunking it, often they go with what they know and hit it with a descending blow, ensuring solid contact, and try to send it long and spin it back. Unfortunately it often doesn't fly far enough and spins too much. An amateur that normally hits with little spin would encounter many fat shots in the conditions the Ryder Cuppers are playing this week.

I've found a technique that I use to reduce the spin on certain wedge shots. I just don't clean my grooves. I can get the ball to just sit because I can hit it high enough with a wedge and just give it the right amount of spin to make it stop. If I clean the grooves, the ball is coming back when it lands. I guess it would depend on where the pin is. If the pin is in the back or middle, I keep them dirty. If it's in front, I clean the grooves.

In the US, most pros need a lot of spin to hold the fast/hard greens we play over here.
