Your selection process might be flawed, but you can't make that the scapegoat. Your guys got whupped. BTW, why the hate for Sergio in the Ryder Cup?
Because his in your face, bounce all over the course antics are tiresome for someone who's accomplished little to nothing outside the Ryder Cup. I dislike for Sergio for other reasons, mostly his incessant whining about Tiger "getting all the breaks," but during Ryder Cup week, he's doubly bothersome.
And oh yeah, he's nearly unbeatable against us...so I guess you could call it sour grapes.
If I were captain, I would ask the NBC broadcasters to say, every time the Euros are standing over a putt, "he is the best in the world at these" or "he never misses these" or "I expect this to go in."
It seems to jinx most golfers, so it's worth a shot!
But as the US Captain, I would go back to grass root golf.
I would install some TEAM MATCH PLAY Competition, be it inter-state or between Universities. This would then prepare the young talent to appreciate TEAM GOLF more, and then Walker Cup and Ryder Cup formats would not be as alien to them.
One thing that can not be changed is money.
The US Pro's are so concerned with the Money side of golf that they can not adapt there mind to playing for Honour. This might be the main point because the US Walker Cup record is alot better over the last 10 meetings than the US Ryder Cup record.
If I were the American Captain I would want the ability to hand pick my team and not be hamstrung by the current selection process. I want the players who are in the best form in a Ryder Cup year. I don't care how they played or how many points they accrued in the off year. What have you done for me lately? If you want to be on my Ryder Cup team show me what you can do in the eight months leading up the competition. My message to my team would be....The hard part was be making the team, not beating the Euros. Now go have fun trying to do that!
get some experience on the team, and pair players way better, the only the americans can win is if the better players get out right wins, and with an early bang
What I have observed the past two Ryder Cups is that our US team is way too intense. Think of when you play your best golf. You play your best when you are relaxed. When the pressure is on, most of us choke. Instead of having a formal dinner with the rookies, go have a beer at the local pub or go to Hooters or some strip club. Enjoy the situation. Have a cigar on the course. From the get go, the "captain" was flooded with questions about the event and he felt the need to be intense. Same with Hal Sutton. It's obviously not a war...it's golf for ****** sake. That is why the europeans are going to dominate this for awhile. Sergio is their most intense player, but he is having fun and poking the needle. He has every right. If I was playing with a guy who was taking it way too seriously, I would poke and prod him too. Fact of the matter is, the "qualifying" doesn't mean anything. I think it should be captain's picks only. I think the captain should pick the golfers he is most comfortable with, aka golf buddies. I went to a bachelor party this past weekend. The first day, I played with a buddy who is to meticulous on the course and had way too many "tips". I played horribly. The next day, I played better ball with some buddies that I drink and smoke cigarettes with. We make fun of each other and laugh constantly. Pretty much the whole time it was me against the two others because my partner was in the water or out of bounds. We all played well that day except for my partner. But we had fun, and that was what was important. Sorry for the long winded response. Good luck to all of you on your next round.

...this is what L.Trevino says at the end of a very good interview (youtube.com `Trevino on U.S. Ryder Cup`) that I saw. Although he concentrates more on the exemption aspect, which might be a better way of restricting non-American golfers playing on the P.G.A Tour, than really restricting access to the Tour as such!
Who is the person he`s referring to who wanted the exemption criteria moved from 60 to the top 125 players....he deliberately avoided using a name! Curious as to who he is/was speaking about on the above interview..someone who `..couldn`t make the top 60` but clearly has/had alot of influence on the Tour!
