Im sure he does care about it but with 6 straight wins he may care more about taking a full month off before the TOUR championship. Im hoping he plays Funai or Chrysler to win it. Otherwise congrats Jim Furyk on your first Vardon.
I heard the same thing last night on The Golf Channel when they replayed his interview. He also mentioned that Annika missed winning the LPGA version of the same trophy because she didn't play enough rounds either.
Im out here and i was on top of that awhile back that he needed the extra tourney to get the rounds in I think we will have to wait and see and im not sure if we will ever get our true answer as to if he cares or not. Meaning if he plays Funai does that mean he wants the Vardon or just staying in playing shape for the Tour. If he doesnt play until the Tour then we may know he really doesnt care all that much.
I could be wrong but I can't see him adding another tournament just to get another Vardon, particularly when it looks as if his buddy Furyk is next in line and has never won it. Tiger has a killer travel and playing schedule from late October until early December and he probably really wants these 3 weeks off!
After all, whether or not he gets the award, he still knows he has the lowest scoring average, right? And he seems to not really care what the "official" best is.....he only seems to care if he believes he's the best.
I thought his comments during the post round interview were revealing of his thought process when they asked him about comparing this year to 2000. He said something to the effect that he doesn't look back for comparisions, he looks forward to a better year to come. So he's more interested in what he'll do in 2007 than what he did this year or 2000. Maybe that's why he's #1?
I suspect Tiger has not got enough room on his mantlepiece for yet another trophy. Her indoors is probably fed up with all that junk cluttering up the home. My wife has dismissed my collection of trophies to the study.
I saw him in an interview in which he made those comments and so there is no link. He seemed to be sincere. If I were to guess there are probably only two stats that he is preoccupied with and they are: (1) # of Majors won (2) # of all time wins.
LG, here is a transcript of the press conference where Tiger made his remarks about the Vardon. It's one of the last 3 or 4 questions asked.
Notice the one about the Euro Order of Merit? I read an article last night from one of the British papers that said if he were eligible, he not only would be in the lead for that honor, he would have more dollars than Casey and Howell combined! Pretty incredible, considering he only played about 10 tourneys recognized by the Euros. Also, it said he would have won it 5 times in the past 7 or 8 years.
