I thought I would rejuvenate this 'old' thread, now that the LPGA 2007 Season is well on underway.....
The big question on my mind is still: Can Lorena Ochoa overtake Annika Sorenstam this year? Can she win her first major(s) this year (the 1st one will be played next week!)? Lorena sure seems to be playing well in this week's tune-up, but Annika isn't playing too badly either! Or will other golfers spoil their fun this year?.....
In any case, I am hoping for a dramatic 2007 LPGA season.
Well, if your question is can Lorena Ochoa overtake Annika, my answer is yes. Of course she can. Whether she will is another question. I'd put my bets on Annika but she's been at the top for a while and I'll believe that she'll stay there until someone can knock her off.
It looks as if Lorena is trying to show the world that she's the new dominant female golfer. She's 10 shots ahead of Annika, 2 shots ahead of Suzann Pettersen, and 5 ahead of Jeong Jang.
Lorena Ochoa and Paula Creamer share the lead (@ -4) of the 2007 Kraft Nabisco Major Championshop heading into the weekend. Annika Sorenstam has fallen behind @ +7.
Well, it didn't happen for Lorena Ochoa during the Kraft Nabisco, but this week she again has a chance to become the No.1 ranked female golfer with a win at the Ginn Open. She is tied with Laura Davies after three rounds. Both Lorena and Laura started the tournament with 66-66-70 rounds. Laura also has a cause worth fighting for: She needs two non-major wins for a spot in the Hall of Fame. A sour footnote: Annika Sorenstam had to withdraw from the tournament with a back injury.
IMO, Ochoa has been the best golfer on the LPGA Tour recently and it will show in the rankings. She's tied for first going into the final round but if it doesn't happen this week, it'll happen soon. It's too bad Annika injured her back but Ochoa has been playing great recently.

It does seem sometimes that there is too much 'lag' in the rankings, much like the lag Vijay faced when he tried and succeeded to overtake Tiger a few years ago. Then again, you don't want the rankings to change every two weeks, because of the volatile nature of this game. It is probably fair enough.... It is kind of like boxing: When you want to beat the champion, you better not have it come to a 12th round decision!

It didn't happen for Lorena this week either: Brittany Lincicome comes from 4 shots back after round 3 to win the Ginn Open in very windy conditions. Ochoa finishes 2nd. Davies comes in 3rd. All three golfers playded in the final group.
Mexico's Lorena Ochoa replaced Annika Sorenstam as world number one on Monday, the first time the Swede has been dethroned since the official rankings were introduced early last year.
Although no LPGA Tour event was played last week, Ochoa takes over at the top with a points average of 12.84 from 50 events.
Sorenstam, who is expected to be sidelined until the end of next month because of a ruptured disc in her back, drops to second on 12.70.
"Today is one of the most special days in my life," Ochoa said in a statement released by her management company. "This is a huge accomplishment for me.
"I am extremely happy about becoming the number one player in the world, something that I have dreamed about since I was little. ......................

* Best followthrough in all of golf!
Seems a bit anticlimactic for her to get the #1 spot in an off week like this but it still doesn't demean what she has managed to accomplish in the last two years. She is definitely deserving and hopefully, she can start adding major wins to her resume.
Congratulations to Lorena on getting the #1 ranking. I agree that she will ultimately be remembered for how many majors she wins in her career but lucky for her, she still has a lot of time to win some.
Lorena Ochoa gets her first win while ranked #1, at the Sybase Classic, overtaking Sarah Lee during the final round. Look at the separation between 1&2 and the rest of the field!
