Gentleman Jim wins again!!

Jim Furyk won the Nedbank Challenge at The Gary Player Country Club, Sun City, S A, for the 2nd year in a row yesterday. He won by two shots from Padraig Harrington and pocketed $1.2 million for his trouble. Jim is immensely popular at Sun City and with the SA fans and if a South African (Els, Goosen, Immelman or Schwartzel) couldn't win then most would like to see Jim win. He dq'd himself a couple of years ago but then, unlike previous players, insisted on playing on for the next two days as a marker out of respect to the rest of the field, the sponsors and the fans who had paid to see him play.

The win took his total '06 earnings to $8.6 million - well done indeed.

The final results were as follows:

276 - Jim Furyk (USA) 68 66 68 74 ($1.2m)

278 - Henrik Stenson (SWE) 67 71 71 69 ($600 000)

280 - Padraig Harrington (IRL) 69 71 65 73 ($400 000)

281 - Ernie Els (RSA) 72 67 70 72 ($300 000)

282 - Charl Schwartzel (RSA) 70 69 71 72 (275 000)

286 - Retief Goosen (RSA) 70 70 71 75 (260 000)

287 - Chris DiMarco (USA) 74 75 66 72, Sergio Garcia (ESP) 72 76 68 71, Trevor Immelman (RSA) 71 69 73 74 (245 000 each)

291 - David Howell (ENG) 69 73 73 76 (220 000)

292 - Jose-Maria Olazabal (SPA) 71 73 69 79 (210 000)

298 - Colin Montgomerie (SCO) 75 77 70 76 (200 000).

Never understood why this tournament still survives. Set up in the aparthied days to lure players to the 'forbidden' land, it has a small field ,pays out silly money in a meaningless end of season bunfight with $200,000 going to last place. The main sponsor is unheard of outside SA and continues to be so.

Surely they would be better to put the purse into a proper event with proper field. When I went in 1995 ,it was a dull tournament with little buzz.

Good for Jim! He's had a great year already, but it's always good to see him win yet another tournament.

Regardless of your feelings I enjoyed the tournament coverage. The Sun City course is beautiful and I enjoyed wildlife shots. It's also obvious that South Africans are very enthusiatic about their golf and especially their native born players.

Lefty has a thing about apartheid - probably sad that he only lived in SA at the end of this "golden era" - which we've now gratefully left behind.

What he won't tell you is that it's a great country, with good and bad people (like most places on earth), with a good infra-structure and lots of places for visitors to have a good time esp. when it's 40* below in some places in the US.

Unfortunately, in England, summer and winter are only differentiated by the daylight hours so the country breeds malcontents whose only solace is drinking warm beer served in ratty pubs while they hanker after their pre WW1world dominance - sad but true.

I think you will find the whole world 'had a thing about apartheid'.
I refused to set foot in the country until it was finished.I do not remember many whites being 'grateful' at the loss of their 'supremacy' and I do remember how they all denied supporting the government of 40 years or enjoying the obvious benefits.

It is a beautiful country ,especially along the coast. Jo'burg is a city to avoid, like most mining towns. I do not think it is a suitable holiday destination due to the highest murder rate and rape problems in the world, although locals always dismiss that as black on black crime and therefore irrelevant.

If England is so awful, why do we have so many South Africans moving here? Please tell me so we can send them back.

i don't even know if you 2 are being serious ere, or if its a bit of a joke.
whatever it is, there is no place for it on a Jim Furyk thread.
a bit of banter is very good, a disagreement on a forum is good, even a heated argument is fine, but there is a place for it and this ain't it.

a small response is necessary as Jim Furyk deserves better.
