This may not be true, but I wonder where his golf related salary would fall on the money list... that might be an interesting stat! If you were to flesh out the percentages for wins, the approximate $52K per year in weekly salary and any bonuses Tiger pays relative to golf. I'm sure with his personal endorsements he's worth more. Like Tiger is worth EXCEEDINGLY more than the $9mill he picked up playing golf. But it would be interesting to see what he picked up on the course this year. Any help?
I worked as a caddy at a very exclusive club and asked one of the tour caddies what he made per year. Obviously I can't give out names but he worked at that time for a top 35 player. He was paid $700/wk, 3% for a top 25, 5% for a top 10, 7% for a top 3, and 10% for a win. Depending on where they were playing he would stay with family, friends, or with his player at his house. Traveling overseas, the player picked up the tab for the hotel and flew him on the private jet with the player and the players family.
It's hard work though, you don't have a day to breath hardly. You are either traveling, or you are out on the course shooting yardages and trying to come up with some kind of game plan for the week. And just like the player, your pay depends on whether he plays the weekend or not.
There was a guy from my hometown who had a full career as a PGA caddie and still at it at the 60+ age. He caddied for players who won tournaments but no majors. I dont think it has been a very lucrative career. Civil servants retire with better pensions that what he has.
Williams is an exception not to be compared with say the guy carrying the bag for John Daly or Rory Sabbatini.
Actually, he did write a book and was pimping it on one of the sports channels a few months ago. I don't think it was a book about Tiger, more about the insights of being a tour caddy.
Steve's book is called 'hitting the zone', and it's mainly about the psycology of golf. It's very interesting actually. It's about goal setting, and finding the zone every time you play. Worth a read.
I wonder how much better we all would shoot with a guy like Steve helping us out. I am betting I would shoot par at least with someone telling me exact yardages and reading putts for me.
In a show here in NZ they recently did an episode about Steve, basically an hour long interview. Very interesting. The host played Steve's home course while Steve caddied for him, giving him yardages, lining his putts, and offering course advice. The host went pretty well!
