Question about the FedEx Cup ($10 mill)

From my understanding:

1. Points are awarded during 36 tournaments during the 'regular' season, ending with the PGA Championship.

2. The Top 144 players (i.e., based on points) go into the FedEx Cup series (all points are reset at this point for the 144 people).

3. Over the 4 weeks, the 144 gets wittled down to 120 => then 70 => then 30 with the winner with the most points getting $10 mill

So my big question....is this going on (i.e., the 120, 70, and 30 player fields for the FedEx Cup) during these 4 tournaments a 'separate' thing within the tournament itself or is the entire tournament field in these last 4 events 120, 70, and 30 people? That part is confusing.

It was my understanding that only those whittled down would play, but I've been wrong before!

I was wondering if the 'whittled down' crew was playing for the big FedEx Cup money while the tourney still had a full field, like having 2 tourneys in 1, but I guess that doesn't make sense...so I agree, it will be a small field. But I thought the purpose was supposed to increase pga pro tourney attendance in the last tournies after the PGA championship, so how does it accomplish that if it whittles down the fields? Still confusing....I bet the players are even scratching their heads trying to figure it out.

I thought it was to increase TV ratings. Overall attendance would have to drop when you cut events...

Good point...probably my mis-interpretation of getting better TV ratings was mis-interpreted by me as getting more players to play in the last series. But wow, to be in the last bunch of 30 with $10 mill going to the winner. I wonder what the others get? Winner-take-all? or portioned out like a regular tournament? How does it work for the NASCAR series?

I found this in Golf Digest:

Quote:
Is this a winner-take-all annuity?
No. The tour is offering $35 million in total bonus money. Second through fifth will receive $3 million, $2 million, $1.5 million and $1 million, respectively. Players further down the list will also collect.

FedEx Cup - Details & Summary

Thanks to stlcard_25 for the article. Here's the details summarized. I can only imagine that the FedExp Cup series will have an impact on the 126th-144th on the money list at the end of the regular season because the money won there is usable towards the top 125 on the money list keeping their players card.
------------------------------------------------------
FedEx Cup Season - 36 tournies (ends with PGA Champsionship)
  • PGA Tour events => 25,000 pts awarded (4,500 pts to winner => 75th place)
  • Majors & Players Champ => 27,500 pts (4,950 pts to winner)
  • WGC events => 26,250 pts (4,725 pts to winner)
  • Opposite field events => 12,500 pts awarded

4 Play-off Events (get money twice – for individual tourney & for play-offs)
  • Points from ‘season’ are reset for Play-offs:
  • top 144 players from the ‘season’ based on pts
  • 1st Play-off tourney => 144 players
  • 2nd Play-off tourney =>120 players
  • 3rd Play-off tourney => 70 players
  • 4th Play-off tourney => 30 players
  • Purses/money for the 4 Individual Play-off tournies ($7 mill / winner gets $1 mill)
  • Pt. Leader = 100,000 pts
  • 2nd place = 99,000 pts
  • 144th place = 84,700 pts
  • Play-off Pts awarded:
  • 50,000 pts /event for 1st 3 events
  • 9,000 pts to winner
  • 4th/Last event = 10,300 pts to winner
  • Money awarded for total points after 4 Play-off tournies
  • 1st place = $10 mill
  • 2nd place= $ 3 mill
  • 3rd place = $ 2 mill
  • 4th place = $ 1.5 mill
  • 5th place = $ 1 mill
  • further down collect too (just to 30 or the original 144?)
Lots of money after the 'regular season' for the players money-list placements to change, especially for the last 25 or so above and below the 125th position.....will make for an interesting finish to retain cards.

Greetings ....

The PGA Tour now has its very own Fed Ex Cup: Points System, Playoff Format and Bonus Pool Payout Web-Page

This was provided as a public service strictly for those who might just actually care about the Fred X Kupp - not necessarily me, though!

Greetings (Again) ---

Some notes on the Fed-Up-With-X Bonus Pool, found at the end of the page (click-on Fed-Up-With-X) ...

1. There are typos on the pool table display ...

» 101-12 5 70,000 is actually 101-125 $70,000 each
» 126-15 0 32,000 is actually 126-150 $32,000 each

2. By my calculations, the individual place payouts total up to $35,138,000

3. Doesn't the breakdown of prizes look weird in some spots ??

If anyone wishes to view a basic description of the Fried Eggs Kupp, check out Wikipedia's FedEx Cup Page.

Thanx-A-Lot, Frank-0-Sport

I think the biggest 'excitement' factor that the FedEx Cup brings is that the bunch of money coming after the regular season impacts the top 125 on the money list by a lot. So those bottom people from 100-125 can be knocked out by the 126-144 gang depending on their winnings. What do the 100-125 on the money list have in winnings after the regular season, somewhere between $500k-$1 mill?(at most). The winner of each of the 4 post-season tournaments gets $1 mill besides what he gets for the FedEx points....I can see lots of juggling around and anxiety on the bottom 1/5th of the money list come FedEx cup time.
