My initial thought would be DiMarco, and I think he could potentially win in either of the three majors, excluding the US Open. And the only reason that I would discount the US Open is because of his length off the tee. His time has come, he's finally healthy, his game has improved consistently each year, and imho -- his window of opportunity is getting smaller and smaller each year as these venues get longer and longer. If he can't break through within the next couple of seasons, I don't see him ever winning a major. I like Chris, I hope I'm wrong about that.
Outside of that, it's really hard to predict. You have to believe that Tiger will claim two of them this year, unless he has yet another off-season. And that could be the case, with the change in his family life coming up. I think that Tiger's focus will be the deciding factor as to who else gets a chance.
Could be Furyk, could be Vijay, could even be DL3 if he continues to play like he did the latter part of last season. But I think that Tiger will once again be the major factor this season, as always it seems.
dont say that, he has a habit of proving people wrong.
Golf is probably one of the hardest sports to play consistently well. Which is why Bryon Nelson's run of 11 straight wins is so extradonary. I don't think Tiger can be on his "A" game for all four majors. The guy is human after all. But then again, he's also Tiger, which makes him fun to watch.
The impending birth of his first child is definitely going to affect is focus on golf. It will be interesting to see how he handles it.
I take Phil to go for it all at the US Open. After the way he botched it, I can only imagine that that one tournament is all he's focusing on.
I'd take Freddie at Augusta for the same reason as Phil at the US Open. Fred Couples had a shot and lost it on putting.
For the Open, I would like to see Ernie or even Sergio take it and VJ for the PGA. All of this is assuming no Tiger of course. I'm just staying with the thread, otherwise this post would only have three words - "tye gerr woulds".
Funny no one has chosen any of the last three US Open winners Ogilvy, Campbell, and Goosen. I can understand Campbell maybe, but I think both Ogilvy and Goosen still have enough game.
That was my 1st thought after reading the opening post. There has been much speculation about what Phil is doing in his off-season: There has been talk about Phil getting fit and about Phil getting fat. If Phil shows up looking like he has made an attempt to get fit, he is on my list. Otherwise he is not. He will be the real Phil either way, but there seems to be a tendency towards 'not-so-fit' that he will have to overcome, or won't. He won his 1st major following an attempt to get fit, and I believe him being not-so-fit last year may have contributed to his poor shots and poor decisions towards the end of US Open.
Other major candidates:
Geoff Ogilvy.
Vijay Singh.
Jim Furyk.
Tiger Woods (I did read the title of the thread but I couldn't bring myself to not put him on the list).
Who is the real Phil ? There is the "good" Phil and the "bad" Phil. The former showed up in last years Masters and both showed up in the US Open. Then the "good" Phil went on vacation. I expect that we'll see some of both this year as usual. I'll go with the usual suspects -
what i meant when i said about Mickelson was the major winning man of the past couple of years (more than ever), and should have been more, i thought we were seeing the best of Mickelson last year, but all that happiness can go down hill with one shot. ok then the GOOD Phil, happy?
Clarkey will have a run at the Open with a group of fans behind him. Harrington and Monty in the uS pen are contenders. Ernie for the Masters and Goose for the PGA. Of course, they're playing in the 'Human' category. Tiger will just wallop everyone around in 2007 (apart from his baby and wifer ;))
