Resurgence of English golf

Six years ago, England had one golfer in the top 100 on the world rankings. Wales had two.

Now England have three in top twenty and eleven in top 100, with Ferrie and Dougherty bubbling under. Most exciting new prospect on European tour is Oliver Fisher, a 17 year old Englishman who is going to make his third cut in three starts as a pro.

Sports are cyclical , so when you are down , sometimes you just have to wait for things to get better and hard work to pay off.

Maybe with England's recent cricket and rugby woes, golf has become a more attractive sport to the young men. The UK as a whole is well represented with folks like Casey, Harrington, Monty, Donald - well, basically all the ones who helped whup up on us in the Ryder Cup!

Exactly, I got a little annoyed at that one, akin to saying Mike Weir is American

Sorry guys, I knew he was Irish, but thought he was from Northern Ireland (the UK part). Didn't take time to actually confirm, just working from memory.

And Weir IS American, as is Ames, Villegas, and any other person from North, South, or Central America. Using "American" to only refer to U.S. citizens is as improper as using "English" to refer to all UK citizens.

After Casey's win in the desert, a Rose win would have made it a good weekend for English golf, but he was 'blown away'.After two weekends of expectation, the English have just failed to win on USPGA Tour, but who will be t against it this summer.

Yes, Rose wasn't able to get it done again. An unforced error off the tee on 18 really cost him. I'm more impressed with Casey each time I see him and wouldn't be surprised to see him break through for a major win this year.

Justin Rose and Luke Donald will be top tier golfers for years. I look for Donald to finally end Europe's major victory drought THIS year.

Best bet: Donald in the 2006 US Open
