If he was working hard during his (very extended) off-season, the results are not so apparent in this start. Flashy player who has ability to score again and again, but also often finds himself in trouble - mixed fortunes. Maybe if he had not hit into the water 3 times on the front nine ...
This event is about as laid-back as it gets on the actual Tour schedule so maybe he doesn't much care. It's unclear whether there is the risk-taking that hearkens back to Old Phil, or some other reason for inconsistency.
So, the New Phil Version 2.0 is ... ? ... still unknown at this early point.
Well it's not as if he was going to win the thing, anyway. It's way too early to draw any conclusions, especially based one a bad front 9 in his first event in months. Phil's never going to be a play-it-safe sort of guy and he never claimed that AFAIK. I don't think that was what his lay-off was about.
OK, I take that back...just turned on the Golf Channel....they're having 30-mph gale winds in Palm Springs....man, like a hurricane. Even the leaders have dropped 4 strokes

For what its worth, there was a news report that said he only played twice since he stopped last year. What he worked on were shots on a range. i find that hard to believe but stranger things have been known to be true.

That's pretty amazing if true, but it would explain his erratic putting.
Hmmm....if I were a 'pro', I would want to practice/test myself on a variety of layouts that would be representative of the type of courses I'd be playing, or perhaps be playing at the start of the season. I can't see practicing ONLY on a practice range doing much for one's confidence in being able to 'hit the fairway', etc.

I like Phil and I always will. Just something about him makes me like him. But the man is worth over 40 million, and avg 4 to 4.5 million a year, so he wouldn't have to win another even if he wanted to.

I think the post on how little golf he played is pretty much on (if you were questioning its accuracy)...I read where PM said he has only played a few times in 4 months"..."most time devoted to fitness and working w/ R. Smith on hitting the driver".....

I guess he feels that his short game will come back in time.
Phil claims he has lost 20-25 pounds, and then put back 10-15 pounds of muscle, for a net loss of 10 pounds. Did anyone actually notice that he seems more fit and muscular looking? I wasn't quite sure whether I am buying his story myself, after watching him (on TV) for a couple of shots. I think he is perhaps a little thinner, but other than that he didn't look or move like much has changed. BTW, he should complete his transformation with a new haircut, and some better clothing: I am not saying that to be a jerk: I think it would show himself and his competition that he means business this year.
