At the time I write this, the PGA Championship hasn't received a single vote!
Should the PGA Championship lose Major Status?
If you think so, what tournament should become the fourth Major? The Players Championship (it is often dubbed 'the fifth major'!)? Another tournament outside the US?
Would I replace the PGA with the Player's if it were my call? yeah I would.
I haven't made up my mind yet and I haven't voted yet, but that would be my replacement also. I wouldn't mind a second same-golf-course-every-year major, and I wouldn't mind if TPC Sawgrass would be the course. I am a little hesitant to give the PGA C. the boot, because of my inexplicable reluctance to mess with 'tradition', and because I see no real reason why the PGA C. couldn't be organized, marketed in such a way that it would become more attractive. I guess I will have to think about this for a few days!
In time, I have no doubt the Australian Open will become the fourth Major. It should have become the fifth Major years ago when the likes of Nicklaus, Player and co dominated the event. Quite simply, once the tournament returns to its former glory under it's current new management team this event will become the dominant event in the Australasia / SE Asia region. May take 5 to 10 years !!
PGA Championship!!!!!! did you hear that CHAMPIONSHIP of the tour? Yes it should be a major ranking with the US and Brittish......How could you want this to be a reguluar tour stop? top 30 on tour......What a great event!!!!!!!! Anyone says less about this MAJOR should be slappped for being a idiot
sorry for bashing.....it was a overall comment not being directed at anyone....sorry if it offended anyone.......Thanks for the respectful PM about my wrongfull ways
I think it should remain a major. Why not? It's been a major for a long time and I see no reason for it not to be. Ok, it's nobodies favorite major but so what, I think it's got the best field of all the majors. The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass also has a great field every year and is considered "The 5th Major", but it's not a major and I don't think it should become one. There's a lot of player who've won at Sawgrass but haven't won a major.....do those players suddenly have a major under their belt if they make it a major??
It needs something, although I would keep it as a major. Something to give it some tradition and identity. Maybe the same venue every year, or a blue jacket. Who knows.

You're right... this is the only major that I don't know what the trophy looks like. I would keep it as a major but perhaps the field should be opened a little more?
Well, I think the problem is, when you ask people what their favorite major is, the majority will reply with the Masters. There are four majors and out of the four, there is always going to be one that is the least popular but I do not think it should lose major status.
I'd say keep it a major and add three more: The Accenture Match Play (the way the PGA Championshp use to be played),The Players' Championship and The Western Open. There are many times more fine golfers and Tour dollars now than there were just 25 years ago, so why keep the number of majors the same? And don't tell me it has to do with "the tradtions of the game." Watch any of the videos of Jack Nicklaus winning his sixth Masters for his last major. Then a dozen years later Tiger comes along and suddenly Nicklaus has one less major. Tiger won three US Amateurs to Jack's one. And Bobby Jones win of four majors in 1930 would be reduced to two as the US and British Amateurs are dropped from the count.
In My Humble Opinion, which is biased in favor of the status quo before 2007 --
1. Grand Slam Majors -- Masters, US Open, British Open, PGA Championship
2. Other Majors -- Players Championship
3. Very Important Events -- Western Open, Canadian Open, Bridgestone Invitational, Accenture Match Play. I have excluded the American Express Championship because I always felt that a 3rd WGC event (non-team) was unnecessary.
4. Important Events -- Arnold Palmer-Bay Hill, Pebble Beach, Heritage, Memorial, Byron Nelson, Bob Hope, Doral Open, Colonial Invitational, Los Angeles Open, Wachovia Championship. Also, Mercedes-Benz Championship and Tour Championship, both of which could be "Very Important" events if played with revised formats and larger fields. Special nod to the late, great Stableford event, the International
I'm usually one for inclusion, so I'm with Crunk and think that a Major should be open to more players. I think many of the pros who aren't in the top 30 look forward to the other majors because they have a chance to make a name for themselves. I think it adds some drama when you have a middle of the pack player contending with the big names for a major title. For some, that is the defining moment of their careers. I think the Players could be included as a major.

I disagree with you about the PGA having the best field. If I remember correctly, they have slots for 24 club pros that must qualifty which eliminates 24 touring pros thereby dragging the entire field down.
Again, if memory serves me, the Players Championship selects the top ranked 150 players and I believe they can claim, honestly and failry, that they have the strongest field. To wit: PGA has 24 touring pros; Masters limits field to about 90; US & British opens are open to qualifiers and include amateurs.
Solution: Keep the PGA but not as a major. Make the Players the 4th major.
As far as awarding Players' winners a major, I see no problem with it. Keep in mind, that Walter Hagen won 4 Western Opens while it was considered a major, but when it was taken off the major list, these 4 majors were taken away from him.
