Masters: Which "non big name" players you cheering for?
I like to follow the big names as much as the next guy. I'm wondering, what players that aren't exactly one of the big names are you cheering for this week?
One player I like is Dean Wilson. He's a Hawaii native and won for the first time on Tour last year. This is his first year in the Masters. He's a college teammate of Mike Weir.
The Masters is for the big boys ... no non big name should ever win the Masters . Mike Weir was a stretch and Bob Jones will roll over in his grave if a Lenny Mattice or Chris DiMarco ever wins one.
Good luck to the little guys like Wilson but stay away from the leaderboard at the Masters ... its for the big boys
Mike Weir was ranked 10th in the official World Golf Rankings before he won the 2003 Masters. That was his third win of the young season, sixth of his career. He finished that season and the next inside the Top 10 of the WR, and has posted 7 Top 10 finishes in the 15 majors he's played since then, including 6th at both the US Open and the PGA last season.
You answered your own question with the stats .... while Mike Weir isnt exactly a Rich Beem or Tad Hamilton , he has done much since his Masters win and not even close to what was expected. If you think a couple of 6th's since 2003 makes him one of the big boys ... well ok . ****, for the longest time most of us forgot Mike Weir even played golf anymore.

Well, I'm not saying I look for Dean Wilson to win. I do agree that the Masters is a tournament where the big players usually come out in the end but there must be some other players that you follow during the tournament, right?
I also forgot Casey Watabu. He's another Hawaii boy in the Masters because he won last years Amateur Public Links. I don't expect him to win or contend either. I just hope he puts a good showing and has a wonderful time there.
I like Henrik Stenson. I use to watch him play the European Tour and always liked the way he played. The only downside is this is his first trip to Augusta. There really no way to prep for those greens except through experience.
