HOF 2007: Curtis Strange & Hubert Green

Former major champions Curtis Strange and Hubert Green have been voted on to the World Golf Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2007.

The two Americans will be inducted on Nov.12 at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Florida.

Former US Ryder Cup captain Strange, whose career tally of 17 PGA Tour titles included the US Open in 1988 and 1989, was elected on the PGA Tour ballot.

Green, winner of the 1977 US Open and 1985 PGA Championship and also four titles on the seniors Champions Tour, was chosen in the veterans' category by the World Golf Foundation (WGF) board of directors selection committee.

Notable golfers. I wonder what criteria the HoF requires to make it to the Hall. Also, Greene was chosen "in the veterans' category." Is there a significant distinction here from the "PGA Tour" ballot?

5 categories - for the regular PGA Tour, at least 40 years old, 10 years, and 2 majors.

This Wikipedia article explains it pretty well, along with the other categories:

Apparently Green (no 'e') was on the ballot for over 10 years, but got less than 5% in both 2000 and 2001. That resulting in him being dropped from the ballot, but was reinstated by the PGA Tour Policy Board.

He was on the ballot again this year - IIRC he got around 52% and 56% the last few years - but his election came because the 7 member Veteran's Committee gave him unanimous approval.

It seems deserving. During the 70s he had 16 wins, 3rd only behind Nicklaus and Watson. 2 majors, 3 Ryder Cup teams.

Well if Crenshaw, Kite and Stewart are HoFers, then for sure Green and Strange were as well.

I still remember him backing off that 3 footer at the 72nd hole of the 1978 Masters because he heard the radio announcer. Not as painful to watch as Doug Sanders at the 1970 Open - Hubert's putt was probably twice as long - but I felt very bad for him. You never once heard him complain about it or blame anyone but himself.

Tells you something about the man's character that he posted four more Top 5s that season, and won a half dozen more titles plus a major afterwards. That sort of thing would have devastated many golfers.
