Ya know..Big John might have had his bad times in golf and outside of Golf..but..Im still into the fact of what John said at the press conference on saturday of the 1991 PGA Champsionship...When he said..and my quote might be a little off..
"Theres nothing more that id love to do than go out and win one for the Fans..Because this is what the game of golf is all about..the fans"
Now tell me if im wrong..but he is STILL the same way..I know alot of people frown upon JD and think he makes the game of golf look bad..but if you really really think about it..Hes just a good guy..who loves the game..Hes as close to an amateur-like pro on the Tour that anyone can relate to imo...
I can see how he is considered to be a 'good guy' but I was more than a little put off when I read about him destroying $50M-60M on gambling! I cannot stand self-destruction, and I especially cannot stand it when it is executed by people who have been handed all the opportunity in the world!
So you dont like Phil either..because im pretty sure he has a gambling problem also..
Edit- Im not saying that John doesnt have his problems as i stated in the first thread..but..he is still a GREAT guy no matter what bs he has done..money he has destroyed..Look at all the good stuff he has done..
John didn't get handled all the opportunity in the world. He worked to get himself into position in '91. Sure he might have gotten away with a little more than an average guy but so what. It happens thats life.
He's a legend, it was his money so no big deal. It was slightly more than $60M tho
JD's a character and a lot of fun to watch. He's good for golf and he really seems to like people, unlike a lot of tour players. Always has time for fans. I don't think he's too bright though; look at his choices in women.
Until JD starts playing PGA quality golf again, I have become quite bored with his "I'm just a regular guy..." attitude.
He has become too much of a regular guy and has gone downhill steadily to prove it to us.
Otherwise, he's a pretty cool dude off the course!
I like JD, he's a bit of a cult figure in golfing circles. I did'nt know he had done that much with the gambling, but i suppose it was his money. Also he has done a lot for charity over the years.
There is no doubting JD's ability on the course but I must reflect on his visits to Australia under very expensive sponsorhip deals. Daly let down his sponsors in a big way with missed cuts and big nights out. I really don't think John Daly is a role model of any description, especially to our young folk, but I do pay great respect to his golfing ability.
A friend of mine met him once at a record store at University Mall in Tuscaloosa, AL back around '92 or '93. Apparently he was friends with the pro at one of the local clubs. Anyway, he said he was friendly and politely asked that he just be left alone to look for some music.
