Tiger plays Oakmont for first time to prepare for U.S. Open

I guess Tiger has never played at Oakmont before.

On the par-3 eighth, he played the back tee at 288 yards, and hit 3-wood to the middle of the green.

"I refuse to hit driver," Woods said, smiling. "It's against my religion."

Those must be some lucky members that got the opportunity to play with Tiger.

They won't play the hole from 288 with US Open green speed. I can almost guaranty that. Scoring at Oakmont will be tough enough.

The head pro (Bob Ford) played the afternoon round with Tiger and Hank, and the Pittsburgh Trbiune-Review had a piece today on his thoughts:

This is US Open. It can NEVER be too tough LOL

I think that 288yd must be the Longest Par 3 on Earth? I'm usually good with the stats, but am unsure bout this one. Can someone clarify ? Thanks

In the 1930 U.S. Open at Interlachen Country Club, it's 17th hole was a 262-yard par 3 during the tournament. Bobby Jones bogeyed the hole twice and double bogeyed it twice.

I always thought the 8th at Oakmont was the longest par 3 in major championship history - in previous years it played around 251-253. I suppose there might be longer par three holes somewhere in the world, but generally 250 was the standard maximum length. Usually anything in the 250-490 range is a par 4.

If I had the opportunity to play that par 3, I wouldn't be playing from the back tees.
