Tiger shot a 67 on Sunday, I really don't think his knee is hurting him that much. He just had some off days, it happens, I mean he can't win them all.

I think I've seen you post this in other threads. It should be a given but I guess some people don't get it. We should start a tally on how many times you have to poin tout that "he can't win them all."
As much as I like Phil, I don't think he will ever be world #1. He will win more tournaments, a couple more majors, and he will remain a solid top-ten player, but there are too many variables that go into being world #1 and with Tiger around along with a lot of other younger talent, it will be hard for someone nearing 40 to do what is necessary to climb to the top.
Hmm, was Vijay 40 yet when he took the #1 spot? I'm pretty sure he was nearing 40, and in fact has had most of his wins since he turned 40. Not sure why Phil wouldn't be able to do the same thing. I think Tiger was around when Vijay became #1 as well. Maybe there are more young guns now though...
I believe Vijay was 40 when he took the #1 spot. I don't see why Phil couldn't do it past 40 either. It's not a matter of whether or not Phil has the talent. He is clearly a great golfer but the problem is, Tiger is ahead of him.
Vijay did get to #1 with Tiger around but Vijay played a lot of tournaments, winning more than 10 that one year. Tiger was also going through that time when he was redoing his swing. It remains to be seen whether Tiger will let up enough to give someone else a chance but Jack Nicklaus also had his "down" periods.
It would be difficult to say Tiger would never give up the #1 spot for the next 10 years straight. So why not Phil?
At Wachovia Championship Tiger's stats:
Distance 304.0, FWY 48.21%, GIR 70.83%, Scrambling 52.63%, Proximity 37'07", Putts per GIR 1.647
At the Players Championship Wood's stats:
Distance 287.9, FWY 51.79%, GIR 62.50%, Scrambling 55.00%, Proximity 36'08", Putts per GIR 1.822
In the latter, that's 2 more fairways hit (29-27), 6 less greens (45-51), 4 more par saves (15/27-11/21), an average of one foot closer to the hole, and 6 more total putts over 72 holes (121-115).
At Quail Hollow he was 2nd in putting (84 putts for 51 GIR) while posting 4 rounds of 70 or better.
At Sawgrass he was 63rd in putting (82 putts for 45 GIR) while breaking par once.
Phil doesn't play in the tournaments Vijay did when he took #1. If he changes his strategy in the future, maybe he could do enough to get #1, but I don't see it happening. I think he likes the schedule he plays.
I think I'll have to agree with those who say that Phil isn't likely to up his schedule to amass sufficient points to points...that is providing he doesn't increase his consistency when he does play. Forgive me for blaspheming here, but I think that when Phil is on his game, he is physically every bit as good as Tiger (ok, I'm ducking now :)). Mentally, I don't know if he will ever reach the heights that Tiger has reached previously...but then, I'm not sure that Tiger will reach those heights either.
Someone told me last night that Tiger was seeing a sports psych. Is that fact? I can't imagine it. She said she heard that on the telecast of the Players. I missed that. Anyone know anything about that?

Well after "Tiger turning into a kitten", I take everything you say as gospel.

Haven't heard or read anything about that, nothing on any golf or sports sites I visit everyday. What was the source for that?

With the possible exception of Jack Nicklaus, who has? That is what makes Tiger so great. There are a lot of guys on tour with similar talent. Tiger has the work ethic, determination, imagination and drive to do things others can't even contemplate. Honestly, I don't see him losing any of that for the next decade.

I recall Johnny Miller mentioning that Tiger used the services of a sports psychologist when he grew up.
Google "Tiger Woods Jay Brunza" and it would appear that Johnny may be right.
I don't know if he is still seeing this (Jay Brunza) or another sports psychologist.
Brunza is also a retired Navy Captain who caddied for Woods before he went to Stanford. He cut him loose more than a decade ago - and off the top of my head, I can't think of anyone who has ever goten a second chance with Tiger - but he did serve on the board of the Woods Foundation.

Thanks for the response and the tip. Looks like she was right. I believe she thought Johnny was referring to currently. I couldn't see Tiger with a sports psych, although now that dad is gone he may actually need one.
I think it's pretty clear that Phil has a goal of one day becoming the #1 golfer in the World. Unfortunately, there's a guy named Tiger Woods ahead of him. Now that he's switched to Butch Harmon as coach, I was wondering whether people think Phil has a chance of becoming #1 in the World?
Reading articles of the switch, I think it's quite obvious that Phil doesn't have a chance this year but Butch seems to think it's possible in the next few years.
What do you all think?
Can he? Sure. Does he care? I wouldn't. All I would want to do is win tournaments. If it just so happens that I then become #1, that would be gravy.
