Not to ask a dumb question here, but I see all these postings about her, so what's her claim to fame? Why does she get media attention?

I admit to not following the LPGA closely, but even at that I do know who Sorenstam, Lincicome, Pedersen, Creamer, and Gulbis to name a few, but no nothing of Wie. I even tried to do a quick look up of stats and she doesn't have anything compared to those that I mentioned and a lot more for that matter. So is there anybody that can explain her claim to fame?

She is the first golfer to become a millionaire for winning NOTHING! ZERO! NADA! ZILCH! Is this a GREAT country or what?

When she was 13 she won a national (grown) women's amateur tournament, and she was said to be able to drive the ball 300 yards: A pretty good story, and the press caught on. The next few years she backed up that performance with showing a lot of promise in a few professional tournaments. The rest is perfect timing & marketing.

I think that's what it really boils down to.

She tried something that not many other females had (entering a mens tournament) and at the age of 14 for that matter. She also almost made the cut which would be considering a great accomplishment even for a male that age.

Unfortunately, she has done terribly in the past few mens events she's entered and although she's done well in numerous LPGA Tour events, she has yet to win.

I would say the "honeymoon" period is coming to an end and now she's going to have to back things up with her play. She's done extremely well on the LPGA Tour thus far but she has a lot of young peers who have had wins and she's going to have to get some of her own.

Shes a sad story who took some real bad advise from her own father! There are gobs of excellent junior golfers **** the course record were I play is 63 shot by a 16 year old kid and it is a pretty nasty layout. I hate the fact she thinks she can compete with the PGA men infact she couldnt beat a 99% of male college players. She will be washed up if she doesnt stick to her own league "Futures Tour". She has proved nothing and deserves just that until she shows some class about were she plays..

Bashing her for playing PGA events is justified but "Futures Tour"? She finished 5 times in the top 5 in her last 7 LPGA events, 95% of LPGA players would love to have these results.

As I am sure you are aware by now Michelle Wie is a rather controversial young female golfer.

ok, here's what I'm piecing together here -

she's basically a young golfer that someone somewhere thought had some talent so that got her some attention, but yet she hasn't done anything yet. In addition I gather by quite a few posts she has an attitude problem and that she's not very humble? Also, she has played in men's tournaments but won't play regularly in the LPGA (that definitely isn't good commentary on her attitude)

My take on it is, she isn't even worthy of attention or discussion until she proves she can compete with her peers in the LPGA. Then if she can do that consistently and she wants to do the crazy stuff like compete in men's tournaments fine. But until then whoever is paying her attention should cease. And she doesn't even have the looks like Gulbis and others, so I could understand attention on that basis, but she doesn't have that.

because she WAS so young and good....now it's just like some Paris Hilton type of "thing"

It appears she beat more than 1% of male college players when she qualified for the Amateur Public Links competition two years ago and then made it to match play and then to the quarterfinals.

By the way, she hot a 63 when she was 10.

Todd Marinovich was a top young QB once, touted to be the next Joe Montana, but he never did anything to amount to much in the NFL.

Being young and having talent and potential only gets you so far. Based on what I've read of her so far, she needs to step up and earn the attention, then we can talk about her in the same breath as other LPGA players that have won.

Once again, I am reminded of Ty Tryon ... was once the next big thing, now a veritable has-been.

I can't believe you don't know who Michelle Wie is. My God, there's all kinds of posts about her on this forum - 'ole rodneyC would be devastated to know that someone who reads this forum and follows golf doesn't know who she is.

i think comparing ty tryon to michelle wie is a bit unfair. sure, there's a really good chance that michelle will never make it on the pga tour just like tryon never did. i think that's where the comparison ends.

if you look at ty tryons pga tour career and michelle wies lpga tour career, you can't compare the both. last i heard, ty tryon was playing on the hooters tour? at least michelle wie will be able to compete on the lpga tour no matter how bad she does on the pga tour.
