I would like to see a minimum age of 18 (or high school graduate if younger) for sponsor's exemptions in all men's and women's professional events. If a minor is good enough to get in, then he/she will find a way by qualifying. A minor may be talented enough, but most of them are simply not socially and mentally mature enough to handle the pressure of playing professional competitve golf.
We've seen enough of this in recent developments that a minor is not mature enough to handle the spotlight.
i disagree. i don't know why minors should be discriminated against. if a minor can play, then they can play. i wonder what percentage of sponsors exemptions over the age of 18 make the cut in their event?
just tried checking information for this week's stanford st. jude event. john daly received a sponsors exemption and made the cut. the only other sponsors exemption i could find was phillip francis, an 18 year old who is the "rolex junior player of the year."
Quote:
The only amateur in the field this week is 18-year-old Phillip Francis of Scottsdale, Ariz., who opened with a 78. Francis, the 2006 Rolex Junior Player of the Year, received a sponsor exemption into the field this week. Francis won five times last year on the AJGA circuit and also captured the U. S. Junior Amateur crown. He has signed a letter-of-intent to play golf at UCLA in the fall. Francis has already accepted a sponsor exemption into the John Deere Classic in mid-July. He hopes to join Tad Fujikawa (Sony Open in Hawaii/T20) as the only AJGA players to make a cut on the 2007 PGA TOUR.
he finished near the end of the pack at a tie for 137th. he would have fit under your minimum 18 year old age limit. the point is, young or old, i don't think many sponsors exemptions make the cut anyway.

I am not forbidding them to play. They just have to Monday qualify.
Oh My ---- !!! Tadd DID qualify. Sorry About That, Golf Fanatic.. I forgot, my bad.
Even so, he's an example of someone who deserves a sponsor invite for the all right reasons. Therefore, the intended thought of my original reply still holds up.

That's true. If Sony decided to give Tadd a sponsors exemption next year, I would look forward to watching him out there. With an age rule like that, Tadd would have to go out and Monday qualify even though he finished in the top 20 last year. I'm sure many of those, if not all, who got sponsors exemptions to the Sony last year who were over the 18 did worse than Tadd.
I don't see why an arbitrary age limit is necessary.
